Halfway through the BMW Championship, the serious contenders to this second playoff event have started separating themselves.

Expect more of that separation today — and expect a few favorites to win their matchups.

Patrick Cantlay (-145) over Hideki Matsuyama

What a crazy game. Matsuyama, the guy who’s made us cringe on so many 8-foot putts this year, picked up more five strokes on the field in the second round, three better than anyone else.

Let’s just say that might not be sustainable.

Cantlay usually does everything well, which is a nice way to win lots of money playing golf.

Xander Schauffele (-175) over Corey Conners

For the second straight weekend, I’m picking against Conners in a matchup and feel the need to add a caveat: I really like his game and I’ve been very impressed at the strides he’s made this year.

That said, I think Schauffele is a very heady live outright bet right now. One week after missing a cut, he could be primed for a title.

Tony Finau (+125) over Justin Thomas

OK, so they couldn’t all be favorites. The way he’s hitting the ball, Finau is a nice play at plus-money against anybody.

It’ll be tough to beat Thomas, who’s similarly striking it solidly, but I could see a Finau/Schauffele final pairing entering tomorrow.
