What is Craps?

Craps is a casino table game that requires players to correctly guess the value of dice rolls. Each roll is composed of two dice to create a finite number of possible outcomes. A craps table can hold up to 22 players at once, providing ample opportunities for many people to win (or lose) simultaneously with each roll. Unlike other casino table games, craps players are not playing against one another directly. Instead, players are wagering on what they believe the outcome of each roll will be. So bettors may have contradictory wagers, but it is not player vs. player game. The excitement and fast-paced nature of craps makes it a favorite for gamblers everywhere.

How to Play Craps

Come Out Roll

The shooter selects his dice and grips them in one hand. He throws the dice which bounce off the backboard and land softly on the felt. The first roll of the dice is called the Come Out roll. When the dice land on seven or 11, it’s called a natural and the players who bet the Pass Line win even money. The players who bet the Don’t Pass Line lose and the shooter rolls again.

Pass Line Bet

A player who makes a Pass Line bet wins and loses with the shooter. The most commonly made wager in craps, a Pass Line bet pays out when the dice land on seven or 11 on the Come Out roll. Known as “crapping out,” players who bet the Pass Line lose when a two, three or 12 come out.  If a point is rolled (4,5,6,8,9,10), it must be repeated before rolling a seven for Pass Line bettors to get paid. You can make a Pass Line bet anytime, but experts advise against it after the Come Out roll.

Don’t Pass Line Bet

Betting the Don’t Pass Line is betting against the shooter. Don’t Pass Line bettors win when the shooter rolls a two or three and lose when he rolls a seven or 11 on the Come Out roll. The bet is a tie if a 12 is rolled. Once a point is established, the bettor wins when a seven is rolled before the point is repeated. When the shooter rolls a two or three, players who bet the Don’t Pass Line win even money.

Point Period

A point number is established when the shooter rolls a four, five, six, eight, nine or 10. When the shooter rolls his point again while avoiding a seven, everyone who bet the Pass Line wins even money. Players who bet the Don’t Pass Line lose and a new round begins.
When he rolls a seven before rolling his point, it’s called “sevens out,” and players who bet the Pass Line lose. The ones who bet the Don’t Pass Line double their money and a new round begins.

Come Bet

Once a point has been established, the player has a new assortment of bets at his disposal. The Come bet works the same way as the Pass Line bet, except it can’t be made until a point is set. The bettor wins if a natural (7, 11)  is rolled and loses if craps (2, 3 or 12) is rolled. When the dice land on four, five, six, eight, nine or 10, that becomes your Come point. Roll it again without rolling a seven to double your money.

Don’t Come Bet

The opposite of the Come bet, you can only win the Don't Come bet if the shooter rolls a losing number. On the first roll, Don’t Come bettors win when the shooter rolls a two or three and lose when the dice land on seven or 11. If the dice add up to 12 it’s a tie. Once a point is established, Don’t Come bettors lose if it’s repeated, but double their money when the shooter rolls a seven.

Odds Bet

A supplemental bet called the odds bet is the only wager you can make in a casino with no house edge. A player must make an initial wager on the Pass Line, Don’t Pass, Come or Don’t Come to be eligible to place an odds bet. Once a point is established, players size their bets based on a multiple of their initial bet amounts. Many online casinos offer 3-4-5x odds. That means a player can wager between three and five times the amount of his original bet.

Bet House Edge Payout Ratio
Pass Line 1.41% 1:1
Don’t Pass Line 1.36% 1:1
Come Bet 1.41% 1:1
Don’t Come Bet 1.36% 1:1
Odds Bet 0% 2:1 (4, 10)
3:2 (5, 9)
5:6 (6, 8)
Field Bets (3, 4, 9, 10 and 11) 5.50% 1:1
Field Bets (2 & 12) 5.50% 2:1
Any Seven 16.90% 4:1
Any Craps 11.10% 7:1
6 & 8 9.09% 9:1

Camaraderie at the Craps Table

Around 90% of players bet the Pass Line even though its 1.41% house edge is slightly inferior to the 1.36% edge on the Don’t Pass Line. The social aspect of the game is enhanced when nine out of 10 players at the table are rooting for the shooter. When the shooter’s hot, the cheering and shouting echo across the casino floor. Tales of late-night parties at Las Vegas craps tables are legendary.
