10 States Combined to Bet Over $100 Billion on Sports in Past Four Years

That’s how much was bet on sports in the 10 most rabid betting states over the past four years , which is when the Supreme Court repealed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 and allowed states to legalize sports on their own.
New Jersey, the state that brought the legal fight, topped all states with $26.2 billion bet. The Garden state was aided by the fact that it took until 2022 for neighboring New York to legalize mobile betting.
Nevada, predicted to be under pressure after it’s near monopoly on legal sports betting ended in May 2018, held its own and finished in second place over the past four years ($23.5 billion). The number is more impressive considering that Covid-19 hampered tourism.
Pennsylvania, a rabid sports state with nearly nine million adults over the age of 21, finished third and is closing in on $14 billion.
Illinois came late to the game and made it harder at times by pulling back its exemption on in-person registration by mobile sportsbooks, but is now in the driver’s seat to have a football season with a possible $1 billion monthly betting handle.
Indiana and Colorado came in No. 5 and No. 6 with impressive numbers — $7.4 billion and $6.5 billion — thanks in part to a multitude of books.
New York came through to the tune of $5.5 billion, but is almost guaranteed to surpass New Jersey in 2022, thanks to mobile betting in the state. New York could finish this year with an annual sports betting total of more than $13 billion.
Rounding out the top 10 in total handle since PASPA fell were Michigan ($5.5 billion), Virginia ($4.6 billion) and Tennessee ($4.1 billion).
