- Jason Sobel details two matchup bets that have value in Round 3 of the 2018 Hero World Challenge.
- His picks analyze the following matchups: Henrik Stenson vs. Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele vs. Justin Thomas
There are two ways to look at matchup bets for the elite-field 18-man Hero World Challenge: Either we can become hyper-focused on such a small group of players or it can be tougher than usual because so many studs are playing head-to-head.
Entering the weekend, let’s hope it’s more of the former than the latter. Let’s get to my three favorite matchups for the third round.
Season Record: 2-3 (-1.11 units)
Henrik Stenson (+105) over Jon Rahm
I really liked the ball-striking assassin Stenson entering this week. Coming off a midsummer injury, he’s probably hungrier to play well than most of his worn-out peers. Playing in the final pairing Saturday, I still like him — especially against Rahm, who will be trying to follow up a 63. That’s rarely a recipe for greater success the next day.
Xander Schauffele (+140) over Justin Thomas
Sure, I’m searching for that plus-money with the underdog in this matchup, but that’s not the only reason I like the X-man. He’s a proven big-game hunter, who especially likes to bring his best stuff against other elite young pros who get more attention than him. Granted, JT’s popularity isn’t without reason, but I think Schauffele could go even lower than his 68 from Friday.
