Bet the Charles Schwab Challenge, Win $200 (No Matter What!)

The PGA TOUR is back this week with the Charles Schwab Challenge, a tournament that indicates we’re entering the heat of the summer golf schedule.

The TOUR makes a familiar stop in Fort Worth this week, with Masters champion Scottie Scheffler favored at Colonial Country Club, followed closely by PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas. We have a strong stretch of tournaments coming, with the Memorial Tournament next week and the RBC Canadian Open, which will feature Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, before the US Open.

Behind Thomas on the odds board are Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland and Will Zalatoris. That means there are four players in the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings following the PGA Championship in this field. Zalatoris moved all the way up 14th after losing to Thomas in the playoff at Southern Hills.

Thomas was due for his win, especially at a major. JT has made 13 starts this season, and he’s finished in the top 10 eight times. He has finished T10 and T40 in his last two starts at Colonial.

Morikawa hasn’t won since last year’s British Open, and he also owns a stellar record at this tournament. In 2020, he lost to Daniel Berger in a playoff, and then last year he finished T14.

Scheffler, meanwhile, has finished T55 and MC in his two career starts at Colonial.

Past Winners

You’ll notice that outside of Kokrak, the winner at Colonial has tended to be a player who doesn’t rank toward the top of driving distance, but they tend to be strong on approach.

Chris Kirk won in 2015, followed by Spieth and Kevin Kisner the following two years. After that, Justin Rose and Kevin Na won in 2018 and ’19. All of Kirk, Rose and Na are back in the field this week.

In 2020, this was the first event for the TOUR after the three-month layoff that began in March due to COVID. The playoff that year should give you an idea of what kind of player tends to thrive at Colonial: Daniel Berger beat Morikawa.

Course Preview

Colonial Country Club will play just over 7,200 yards as a par-70, a far cry from the almost 7,600 yards the players saw at Southern Hills for the PGA Championship.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you should see a huge increase in scores, though.

In the last six years, the winning score has been better than 15-under par just twice. The last three first-place tallies have been 13-under, 15-under and 14-under by Kokrak last year.

We have seen some players try to use their length off the tee to eliminate some of the noteworthy doglegs at Colonial, but this is generally a place that ball-strikers who thrive on approach do well.
