Bet the Scottish Open risk-free up to $1,000.

It’s links golf season.

The Scottish Open is the annual tuneup for players ahead of the Open Championship, and it always brings out the biggest names in golf. That’s no different in 2022.

Fourteen of the top-15 players in the world will be teeing it up outside of Edinburgh at the Renaissance Club, which will be hosting the Scottish Open for the fourth time.

The only player not in the top 15 of the Official World Golf Ranking not in the field this week is Rory McIlroy, who is playing in the JP McManus Pro-Am on Monday and Tuesday along with many top players before turning his focus to St. Andrews. McIlroy isn’t someone who needs help on links golf.

McIlroy is the consensus betting favorite next week at St. Andrews, and he’s followed by the trio that tops the Scottish Open odds board: Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas.

While Rahm, Scheffler and Thomas will primarily use this tournament as prep, they’ll no doubt be out to win. All three finished T12 or better last year at Renaissance.

Reigning Open Championship winner Collin Morikawa and U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick are among the next tier for bettors, as is Xander Schauffele coming off his win at the Travelers Championship.

The weather for this week looks like what you’d expect for Scotland in the summer. Highs will be in the high 60s and winds will be consistently in the mid-teens.

The last big-name player (at the time) to win this event was Rickie Fowler in 2015. Before him, Phil Mickelson won in ’13 and Justin Rose in ’14.

Change In 2022

In recent years, the Scottish Open has been a huge stop on the DP World Tour. This year, though, it's part of the annual PGA TOUR calendar.

Since all the top players were already spending this week at the Scottish Open and not stateside at the John Deere Classic, the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour have it on both of their schedules for their respective seasons. Both tours also will count the Barbasol Championship this week and next week's Barracuda Championship.

Past Winners

I’m not sure what it is about the Scottish Open, but there’s usually some significant drama on Sundays.

The last three editions of this event have ended in a playoff, as well as four of the last five and seven of the last 10.

Min Woo Lee was victorious last year, taking down Thomas Detry and Fitzpatrick in a playoff. Aaron Rai bested Tommy Fleetwood in extra holes in 2020, while Bernd Wiesberger beat Benjamin Hebert in ’19.

Usually, the winner of this tournament doesn’t tend to go onto great success the following week at the Open Championship. Mickelson is the exception, though, doing the double in 2013. Mickelson beat Branden Grace that year in a playoff at the Scottish, and he overcame a five-stroke deficit entering the final round to win his only Claret Jug.

Course Preview

If the weather remains dry, as it currently is projected to do, expect the winning score to be in the high teens or low 20s. Wiesberger tied the tournament record with his 22-under winning score back in 2019. In ’20, Rai was the winner at just 11-under because the weather didn’t cooperate with the players.

The Renaissance Club is a par-71 that is a little over 7,300 yards. Strong iron players have tended to thrive here in recent years, which is no surprise.

Another thing that isn’t surprising: DP World Tour regulars tend to come out on top here.

Lee has played on the PGA TOUR more often this season but has thrived more in Europe since turning pro. Wiesberger is a DP World Tour staple, Rai is English and goes between the PGA TOUR and Europe throughout the year, while 2018 winner Brandon Stone is seen much more in Europe than the United States.
