  • Jason Sobel gives out his three favorite matchup bets for the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
  • After relying on some lesser-known golfers in the first round, he's going back to the well with a few stars in the second.

We went after some lesser-known players in our opening-round matchup bets at the Farmers Insurance Open and, well, that worked out to the tune of an 0-2-1 record, so let’s hammer the studs today.

Season record: 16-25-2 (-10.11 units)

Rory McIlroy over Rickie Fowler (-125)

He’s never played it before, but I have a feeling Rory is going to enjoy his first trip around Torrey Pines’ North Course. Don’t be surprised to see a 65 or lower.

Meanwhile, Fowler is playing a new golf ball and didn’t quite look dialed in with it on Thursday.

Jason Day over John Rahm (+105)

The defending champion, Day, put a new driver into play on Thursday and said afterward that he gradually became more comfortable with it during the round. That should continue today, while Rahm is chasing an opening 62 when seemingly every putt found the bottom of the hole.

Justin Rose over Jordan Spieth by -0.5 (-115)

I said before the tourney started that I didn’t think Spieth could turn around his game on a tough track like Torrey. Well, fortunately for him, he started out on the “get-right” North Course. It won’t be so easy on the South.

Rose, on the other hand, looks like he’s been working with temp caddie Gareth Lord forever. Don’t be surprised if he’s your overnight leader entering the weekend.
