Rickie Fowler didn't qualify for the last two U.S. Opens. He established a strong lead Thursday by posting 10 birdies in the opening round. Fowler and Schauffele were lights out, but Wyndam Clark finished -7 with Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler, and the bright Sam Bennett all names within five strokes.

There was lots of excellent ball-striking on display in the first U.S. Open to take place at LACC, but the 23-year-old Bennett was exceptional in his first outing as a professional.
