While we anxiously await November 2022 for the possible legalization of California sports betting, state tribes are gearing up for 2024.

State tribes, on July 22, submitted enough signatures to qualify another sports betting proposal for a ballot vote — the Age-Verified Tribal On-Line and In-Person Sports Wagering & Homelessness Solutions Act.

If passed it would allow the tribal casinos, also pushing an in-person only sports betting measure on the 2022 ballot, to take online wagers on their land likely by 2025.

Background on Initiative #21-0039

State tribes introduced the sports betting proposal back on Nov. 5, 2021 and collected signatures between Jan. 11-July 11.

According to Secretary of State Shirley Weber, petitioners have collected 1.3 million signatures, well over the 997, 139 needed to be deemed eligible for the ballot.

Pending county checker approval voters will be able to vote "Yes" or "No" on the measure in November 2024. If less than 95% of signatures are verified by August 21, it won't make the ballot.

Supports

Here are the supporters who made donations:

  • Californians for Community Safety, Equality and Reinvestment – $12.5 million
  • Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians – $2.5 million
  • San Manuel Band of Mission Indians – $10 million

Until then, donors and other state tribes will make a push for this proposal if the Nov. 2022 ballot does not result in sports betting legalization.

Expect the release of additional commercials, billboards, and events as state tribes prepare for the future.

Check back for an update at the end of August when the verification period has concluded.
