New Jersey Breaks Monthly Sports Betting Handle Record By Any State With Record August article feature image

New Jersey obliterated the all-time monthly sports betting handle record in August, reporting $667.9 million in bets made for the month. Operators turned that into $39.5 million in revenue.

After several disappointing months due to the lack of sporting events, the pent up demand and return of leagues like the NBA, MLB and NHL helped books deliver a monster month for the Garden State. It topped Nevada’s previous record of $613.6 million in November 2019, by more than $50 million.

With four straight $600 million months, which is possible due a jam-packed fall sports schedule, New Jersey still could top the $4.5 billion bet in the state last year, second to only Nevada, which finished 2019 with $5.3 billion in bets.

Sports wagering in New Jersey for August 2020 was up 56.7% compared to August 2019. Mobile betting accounted for nearly 90% of wagers.

New Jersey’s sports betting operators, through August, have taken in $2.5 billion in bets over the last two-plus years.
