Ohio will come to sports betting late in the game after more than half the nation’s states have legalized it. But the Buckeye state does offer something no one else has done: Betting kiosks outside sports bars, sportsbooks and bowling alleys.

When sports betting goes live in Ohio on Jan. 1, golf clubs and even supermarket locations may have kiosks.

Thousands of companies have so far applied for the right to do so, including Kroger. The supermarket chain has applied for kiosks at all 42 of their Ohio locations.

The final day to submit a proposal for a kiosk is Monday, with a required business plan to follow.

Other companies that have so far applied include Buffalo Wild Wings, Roosters Wings and Holiday Lanes, a bowling alley company.

The machines are an add-on to the already 8,500 kiosks in the state run by the Ohio Lottery and the Casino Control Commission.

Bettors are limited to $700 in weekly bets on a state-run kiosk per week. Winnings, depending on the size, will come in various forms including vouchers or money loaded onto the lottery app.

Fans will be free to wager on any sport on the kiosks despite the wager limit. That include in-state college sports, which some states — including New Jersey, New York and Virginia — ban outright.

So, $700 wagers per week on the state's most popular team — Ohio State football — will be permitted at kiosks throughout the Buckeye state.
