My Condolences to Cardinals ML and Under 8 Bettors

My Condolences to Cardinals ML and Under 8 Bettors article feature image

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas held the Bucs in check for most of his seven innings of work, giving up just two runs. Bud Norris then pitched a scoreless eighth before Greg Holland took the mound in ninth.

The Redbirds led 5-2 heading into the home half of the ninth inning, when the Pirates came to bat for their last licks. With the over/under at 8.5 runs, under bettors had to feel confident about their chances.

Cardinals closer Greg Holland — who hadn't given up a run in his past four outings — entered the game in search of his first save of the season. With only seven total runs, under bettors even had an insurance run in their back pocket.

However, it wouldn't take long for this one to slip away from the Cards and under bettors alike. Holland gave up a double and a single to the first two batters he faced. With runners on first and third and nobody out, Holland did get Colin Moran to put one on the ground up the first base line, but first baseman Jose Martinez whiffed. That allowed the Pirates to score a run and keep the line moving.

Under bettors happily would've traded a run for a double play, but Martinez couldn't field it cleanly. The run would've put the total at eight, and for all intents and purposes, the proverbial fire would be squelched — with nobody on base. But, instead, the Martinez error put more than just the game total in danger, as Cardinals moneyline and -1.5 bettors started to have the night sweats.

Next up, Jody Mercer.

Triple. Two runs score to tie the game. There goes the under and the Cards' lead.

With Mercer standing on third base with nobody out, it looked like the Cardinals were dead as well.

But St. Louis escaped, albeit temporarily, as they lost in the 11th inning — when Starling Marte drove in David Freese (of course it was him) — who got into scoring position on a wild pitch.

This double moose and night sweat came to you compliments of Greg Holland and Jose Martinez. Both had their fingerprints all over this one.
