A compelling matchup takes shape in the Bronx as the New York Yankees welcome in the Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game series. Monday’s matchup will feature pitchers Tyler Glasnow of the Rays and Gerrit Cole of the Yankees on the mound, the third time the pair have faced one another this season.
The Rays have dominated the series winning six out of the seven games played thus far. The Rays hold a 3.5-games lead on the Yankees in the American League East, and while the Tampa would love nothing more than to extend its lead, this game isn’t exactly a must-win situation for the Rays.
Tampa Bay Rays
Tyler Glasnow will make his seventh start of the season tonight. He picked up his first win of the season in his last start. It was also the first time he pitched beyond the sixth inning. The Rays have won in his past three starts, outscoring the opposition 25-12.
Glasnow’s last start was certainly a step in the right direction. It was the first time this season he allowed fewer than two walks in an outing. That performance came against the Baltimore Orioles who rank 26th in the league in walks drawn (7.9%). Tonight, he’ll face a different challenge against the Yankees who rank eighth in the league in walks drawn (10.7%).
Glasnow has struggled with walks throughout his young career. In 2018 he had a 4.27 BB/9 walk ratio and this season it’s up to 4.50 BB/9. While his 3.52 FIP points to his runs allowed improving, he’ll likely need to cut his walk ratio in half in order to really turn the corner.
In 51 plate appearances, Yankees are hitting .159 against Glasnow, but they’ve been able to draw six walks against him, and at an 11.7% rate, that’s already higher than their season average.
New York Yankees
Glasnow will be opposed by Yankees ace Gerrit Cole. While Cole has yet to get a win against the Rays in his career, he has pitched a bit better than Glasnow in their head-to-head matchups. Cole is 0-2 with 3.65 ERA against the Rays.
He’s already off to a fine start this season with a 4-1 record, 3.51 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. In 91 at-bats, the Rays are hitting .231 against him, but they’ve been able to reach him for three home runs. This season, Cole has a 2.20 HR/9 ratio, but he’s been able to limit the damage with a 1.76 BB/9 ratio while striking out 11.63 batters per nine innings.
This game should be another closely contested matchup as each team will look to take each other’s best punch.
With the Yankees trailing 1-6 in the season series and their ace on the mound, they’ll have their best chance in the opening game to prove to the Rays that the division race isn’t over just yet.
I think you can make a case for both teams in this matchup tonight. The Rays have won their past five against the Yankees and eight of their past nine. Cole’s teams are 5-3 against the Rays, but 4-1 against them at home.
For me, Cole is the X-factor in this game.
He recently had his 20-game winning streak snapped in his last outting and I’ve got to think he’ll be looking to start a new streak of his own. This game means more for the Bombers and If I had to pick between Cole and Glasnow I’m going with the Yankees’ right-hander.
BetMGM has the best price on the board with the Yankees at -139. I’ll take the Pinstripes at home tonight as they look to claw their way back to the top of the division in the AL East.
