  • Today the public is backing three significant favorites: the Braves, Cubs, and Mariners.
  • The Braves are 14.5 games ahead of the Mets in the National League East.
  • The Cubs have Jon Lester on the mound and are facing the worst team in the NL.
  • The Mariners are in the mix for the American League wild card and at home against Sam Gaviglio and his 5.10 ERA.

The public’s top plays went 2-1 Saturday, but because of their high prices they actually lost a fraction of a unit. That hasn’t deterred public bettors from favorites, however, as all of Sunday’s most popular picks are once again at minus money.

Atlanta Braves (-135) at New York Mets

1:10 p.m. ET

Eighty-one percent of bettors are behind the Braves, making them the most popular play of Sunday’s early starts. They’ve also landed 92% of dollars but have fallen from -145 to -135.

Why the public loves Atlanta: The Braves are 14.5 games ahead of the Mets in the National League East, and Atlanta was shut out last night. Whenever a bad team beats a good one, the public assumes the opposite will happen the next day. There’s just no way the Braves could lose two in a row to the Mets, right?

Chicago Cubs (-195) vs. San Diego Padres

2:20 p.m. ET

The Cubs have collected 80% of bets and 74% of dollar to this point, but they’ve fallen from -210 to -195.

Why the public loves Chicago: Another Jon Lester start, another huge public backing. Of course, this is also a matchup between the best and worst teams in the National League, so there’s that.

Seattle Mariners (-147) vs. Toronto Blue Jays

4:10 p.m. ET

Like the Braves, the Mariners have 81% of bets but have moved slightly from -145 with 89% of dollars.

Why the public loves Seattle: Only 2.5 games shy of the last playoff spot in the American League, the Mariners are still clearly in the mix. The Jays, though, are 14 games back, so this matchup means more to Seattle. The Mariners face Sam Gaviglio and his 5.10 ERA, which only makes the public more likely to back the home team.
