  • Oakland's young star pitcher, Jesus Luzardo, will take the mound tonight against the Texas Rangers, and he's set up well against a lineup that typically struggles against lefties.
  • Veteran Lance Lynn is on the other side, and he'll have his hands full against a high-powered A's lineup that has performed well against fastball pitchers.
  • Where's the value in this one? I break down the matchup in-depth and highlight some betting opportunities below.

The AL West race is wide open to begin the season. The A’s could take over first place with a win on Tuesday, while the Rangers could pull within half a game of first.

The A’s will send their young stud Jesus Luzardo to the mound for his second start in big leagues, while the Rangers send veteran ace Lance Lynn to see if he can shut down the A’s high-powered offense.

Projected Lineup (via Fantasy Labs)

The Rangers offense has struggled out of the gates, with only a .287 wOBA and 76 wRC+. Joey Gallo has been their only bright spot, driving in eight of their 24 runs and producing a .478 wOBA.

Texas was fairly average against left handed pitching last year with a .317 wOBA, so it’ll be interesting to see how they handle Luzardo’s stuff.

Rangers Projected Starter

Lance Lynn, RHP

Projected Stats (ZIPS) (via Fangraphs)

Pitch Arsenal (via Baseball Savant)

Lynn has been really good to start the season with no runs allowed and only three hits in 12 innings of work. His fastball has been elite, allowing only two hits in 136 pitches to begin the season.

Lynn is predominantly a fastball pitcher, and for good reason, as he has tremendous control and is effective at getting batters to swing and miss, producing a 30.7% whiff rate on his fastball in 2019. He’s also mixed in a slider/cutter-type pitch that isn’t elite by any means, but does give batters a different look and helps offset his fastball.

The top of the A’s lineup feasted on fastballs in 2019. So Lynn’s elite-level fastball will be have to keep Oakland’s hitters at bay.

Projected Lineup (via Fantasy Labs)

The A’s have also struggled out of the gate offensively with only a .268 wOBA and 76 wRC+. They’ve surprisingly struggled against fastballs with -6.6 weighted fastball runs in their first 10 games.

Last season, they mashed fastballs, ranking sixth in MLB with 75.2 wFB runs.

Athletics Projected Starter

Jesus Luzardo, RHP

Projected Stats (ZIPS) (via Fangraphs)

Luzardo is Oakland’s top prospect and has some electric stuff. He brings 97 mph cheese from the left side, followed up by a sick curveball and a decent changeup.

His stats in the big leagues so far are pretty stellar, allowing only a .152 average and striking out 23 battera in only 18.2 innings. The Rangers were fairly average against lefties last season, so Luzardo should mow down their lineup.

The Rangers had the day off yesterday, so their pen should be fully rested for Tuesday. The A’s bullpen got a much needed day of rest yesterday as Frankie Montas put in six innings of work in a blow out, so they should have no restrictions on Tuesday.

Projections and Pick

My numbers seem to be lined up with the market for right now, though I am closest to a bet on the Rangers First 5. I’d bet the Rangers First 5 if it gets to +145.

For the full game, if we see significant line movement away from Texas, the Rangers are worth a wager at +150. The A’s are worth a wager at -117, though I doubt it ever comes close to there.
