Down goes UNC! Wofford makes history as 25-point underdog
Last night in Chapel Hill, the Wofford Terriers secured their first win over a ranked team in school history (now 1-25) by stunning the defending National Champion North Carolina Tar Heels. Wofford closed as a 25-point underdog, and +5000 on the money line at the few books that even offered one. This upset marked only the third time since 2005 that a Division 1 team won outright as an underdog of at least 25 points in the regular season.
- 11/07/2007: Gardner Webb (+26) defeated Kentucky 84-68
- 11/13/2015: Western Illinois (+25.5) defeated Wisconsin 69-67
- 12/20/2017: Wofford (+25) defeated North Carolina 79-75
I still wouldn't recommend betting on 25-plus point underdogs to win outright as a viable long-term betting strategy. Even after last night's shocking upset, D-1 NCAAB underdogs of greater than 25 points are 3-304 (~1%) on the money line since 2005. A $100 bettor who bet on every one of them would still be down -$12,600, according to Bet labs.
