College Football Bad Beats Roundup, Week 6: Karma for Betting on Alabama

We've all been victim to some bad beats. We've been on the right side … and certainly on the wrong side more than once.

But have you ever had a $1.3 million painting shred itself after being won at auction? Didn't think so.

So take your bad beats on Saturday with a grain of salt, because it could always be worse.

Here are some of the worst and weirdest beats of college football's Week 6.

Clemson-Wake Forest Under

• The Line: 61
• The Score: Clemson 56, Wake Forest 3
• Time Left: 1 minute, 1 second

Lyn-J Dixon is dead to Clemson-Wake Forest under bettors. Which is a shame, because that's a cool name, and this was a great run.

Clemson had the ball at its own 48-yard line on third-and-5 with a minute to play. It led 56-3. If the Tigers had taken a knee, they would have had to punt, so no harm in just running the ball up the middle on third down. Clemson was just trying to kill clock.

But Wake Forest over-pursued. Lyn-J Dixon bounced it outside and scored a 52-yard touchdown to make the score 63-3.

Alabama-Arkansas Spread

• The Line: Alabama -35
• The Score: Alabama 65, Arkansas 24
• Time Left: 13 seconds

If you're betting Alabama week to week, I guess I can't blame you. It's fun and convenient to bet the best team in the country, even when you're laying five touchdowns on the road in a conference game. The Tide are inhuman.

But this was some vindication for those brave enough to back Arkansas. Trailing by 41, the Hogs got a 78-yard kick return to the Alabama 22 after a Tide touchdown, then punched it in from the 1-yard line and converted the PAT with 13 seconds left to cover +35 — by a point.

Shout out to anyone who got Alabama -33.5 when it was up for a few hours on Sunday.

West Virginia-Kansas 2H Under

• The Line: 28
• The Score: 24 points in second half
• Time Left: Last play of the game

Peyton Bender threw a meaningless touchdown as time expired to push this second half total over. The Jayhawks even converted a nothing 2-point conversion, just to taunt you.

Really, this entire game was one giant beat for West Virginia (-27) and over (61) bettors.

Will Grier — who had the second-best odds to win the Heisman entering the week — threw three interceptions inside the Kansas 5-yard line. He was also strip-sacked in Kansas territory in the third quarter.

NC State-Boston College Spread

• The Line: N.C. State -6.5
• The Score: N.C. State 28, Boston College 16
• Time Left: 3 minutes, 33 seconds

There was plenty of time left in the game for it to swing again, but how Boston College got inside the number made this tough to swallow for anyone backing the Wolfpack.

N.C. State led 28-3 with little more than a minute left in the third quarter. B.C. then chipped away with a pair of touchdowns to make it 28-16.

Then late in the fourth, Boston College forced an N.C. State punt on the Wolfpack 22. The Eagles blocked the punt with and it landed perfectly in N.C. State's end zone to give Boston College an easy score with 3:33 left.

The Wolfpack still led, but by a 28-23 score. They then recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock to win, but not cover.

UC Davis-Northern Colorado Spread

• The Line: UC Davis -13.5
• The Score: UC Davis 49, Northern Colorado 10
• Time Left: 9 minutes, 15 seconds

When you're almost four touchdowns away covering with nine minutes left, you need every possible point. Northern Colorado got 'em all.

After UC Davis went up 49-10 with about nine minutes left, UNC got:

• A touchdown and 2-point conversion
• A safety, because UC Davis dropped the kickoff at the 2
• A touchdown and 2-point conversion
• A touchdown and 2-point conversion

UNC converted a fourth down on two of those drives an third-and-23 on another.

We'll do the math for ya. That adds up to 26 points, so Northern Colorado lost 49-36 to cover +13.5.

Florida-LSU Under

• The Line: 44
• The Score: Florida 20, LSU 19
• Time Left: 1 minute, 45 seconds

This game was the bruising grind it always is. And of course it was within a point as LSU tried to move downfield for a game-winning field goal.

Instead, Joe Burrow threw his second interception of the year with under two minutes left, and it was returned for a touchdown. Had Florida stopped LSU and gotten the ball back, the Gators could have taken a knee to run out the clock and win 20-19.

Under bettors felt good at just 27 total points entering the fourth quarter, but got burned with the pick-six and 27-19 final score.
