Ten conference championship games will grace our televisions by the time Saturday is over. Playoff berths will be crowned. It will be glorious.
There were also a handful of meaningless makeup games played because of early-season weather cancelations in which a bunch of teams just don’t show up. Two led to some bad beats already.
We’re compiling the worst beats of college football Saturday here, including an atrocity on the NC State-ECU over/under because the Pirates decided to start playing with two minutes left.
ECU-NC State Under
- The Line: 60.5
- The Score: NC State 58, ECU 0
- Time Remaining: 2 seconds
- Final Score: NC State 58, ECU 3
ECU had not gained more than two yards on a single drive in the second half before its 49-yard drive ended with a 46-yard field goal as time expired.
The Pirates were down 58-0 and got the ball on their own 25 with less than two minutes to play. Running back Anthony Scott ripped off a 53-yard run, then the drive stalled before ECU decided to kick with two seconds left.
Drake-Iowa State Over
- The Line: 53
- The Score: Iowa State 27, Drake 24
- Time Remaining: 15 minutes, 0 seconds
- Final Score: Iowa State 27, Drake 24
Considering half The Action Network staff was on this under, you won’t hear many complaints around here.
But after Iowa State scored a touchdown with 26 seconds left in the third quarter, neither team scored in the final 15 minutes to keep this game under.
The teams combined for just 71 yards in the fourth quarter. Drake had first down at the Iowa State 26-yard line with six minutes left, but took a holding penalty and ran for a loss of nine to knock itself out of field-goal range.
