The hire of Dan Mullen came at the perfect time for the Florida program and for the former Mississippi State coach himself.

The on-field product and internal environment were in disarray in 2017 during and after Jim McElwain's firing, but Mullen should fix both of those issues.

Mullen took Mississippi State as far as any coach could, considering its budget and revenue. Whether serving as a head coach or as an assistant, he has produced players like Alex Smith, Tim Tebow and Dak Prescott.

Now Mullen will need to rebuild an offense that fell to 108th in S&P+ last season.

The first thing Mullen will need to sort out is the quarterback situation, but it looks like incumbent Feleipe Franks is ahead of Kyle Trask and Emory Jones right now. He was bad last year — 6.3 yards per attempt, a 54.6 completion percentage and nine touchdowns to eight interceptions — but hopefully Mullen can get the former four-star QB right.

Mullen inherits a decent situation. The Gators rank 21st overall in returning production, and new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will have plenty of players who can cause disruption for his 3-4 scheme.

The Gators also caught a break with their schedule. They leave the state of Florida just three times (Tennessee, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt) and get a bye week before they play Georgia at the world's largest outdoor cocktail party.

The win total has lost some value, but I still like Over 8 (-130) and I like Florida to win the SEC East at +550, as you can hedge against Georgia on Oct. 27.

Since 2015, Florida is 12-1 straight-up as a home favorite. I am already invested in Gators PK against LSU (Oct. 6) in the Game of the Year market.
