How important is cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. to LSU football?

Two-points-off-a-key-number important, apparently.

For much of the week, Saturday afternoon's LSU-Mississippi State spread was hovering right around the key number of 17 — with the reigning champs obviously favored.

But with the news that their star corner would miss the game with an illness — one that's reportedly not related to COVID-19 — that spread immediately dropped down to a consensus of -15. The total also ticked up a half point from 56.5 to 57.

Given the greater variance of player skill in the college game, it's far more common to see a spread move as a result of a missing player. But still, a two-point move — off a key number, no less — for a defensive player says a lot about how much respect the betting market has for Stingley.

As of 11:30 a.m. ET, 51% of spread tickets have landed on LSU, but they've generated 79% of actual money.
