As recently as Wednesday, John Murray, race and sportsbook manager for the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook, believed the Baker Mayfield to Cleveland hype was nothing more than an elaborate smoke screen.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter stoked the fire Thursday morning, reporting that many coaches and executives around the league believe Mayfield will be taken by Cleveland with the first overall pick.
Sportsbooks reacted quickly to this news, as oddsmakers adjusted Mayfield’s odds to be the No. 1 overall pick from +110 to -200 earlier this morning. After a brief period of inactivity, books moved Mayfield’s price once again, settling in at -500.
Draft props are low-limit and are therefore easily affected by small wagers and/or books simply moving on air to keep up with breaking media reports and speculation.
