Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was visibly limited in the team’s 12-9 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football.
With Carolina’s playoff hopes now all but gone, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Panthers will sit Newton for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
On Tuesday morning, oddsmakers opened the Panthers as 3-point favorites over the Falcons, with the game’s over/under at 47.5.
However, as rumors swirled that Newton may sit out the remainder of the season to rest his ailing shoulder, sportsbooks pulled the Panthers-Falcons game off the board, meaning it was temporarily unavailable for betting.
Following Rapoport’s report, the Falcons reopened as 3-point favorites, flipping this point spread six points from its opener.
Prior to the start of the 2018-19 NFL season, Newton was worth approximately four to five points to the spread, meaning today’s adjustment suggests Newton is worth even more.
Perhaps the fact that little-known backup Taylor Heinicke will likely start in Cam’s place is playing into Newton’s value, especially when attempting to predict how the betting public will perceive the drop off.
Oddsmakers also adjusted the over/under down to 44 to account for Newton’s absence.
