Panthers Hand Tom Brady His Second Worst Loss Ever Against The Spread in Historic Upset

The Panthers pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent memory — especially in the context of the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady.

Brady's worst loss against the spread (ATS) in his career had been at Miami in 2019, when the Patriots lost 27-24 as 17.5-point favorites in his last season in New England.

The Bucs had closed as 13.5-point favorites against the Panthers after third-string quarterback P.J. Walker got the nod, and skill position assets Christian McCaffrey and Robbie Anderson were shipped away via trade.

Brady's third-worst loss ATS was against the Arizona Cardinals in 2012.

The five-time Super Bowl MVP has now lost five consecutive games against the spread, his longest streak since the 2007 NFL season and the longest active streak for a team in the NFL. It's also his second straight loss as a double-digit favorite — the first time this has happened in Brady's career.

The Bucs as 13.5-point favorites were the third-shortest team to lose over the last two years. The Jaguars won two games last season as 14-point and 16-point underdogs — the former against the Colts and the latter against the Bills.

The Panthers had been as long as +550 on the moneyline against the Brady-led Bucs. It's the biggest upset of the year on that front, with road underdogs in particular experiencing a historic year.
