Joe (@pointshaving) and I (@stuckey2) put our heads together to come up with our consensus play of the day on the ice.

Saturday recap:

Ryan Miller was up to the task in San Jose, but the Sharks found a way to get us a push in the shootout. In our other side, the New York Rangers and Kevin Shattenkirk came through in overtime for us in a coin flip game from the opening drop.

Moving on to Tuesday…

Sabres -105

One of the worst teams in the National Hockey League hosts the Presidents' Trophy winner from 2016-17 tonight at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. The Washington Capitals (8-6-1) are off to a pedestrian start despite winning three consecutive games, including last night's overtime win at home against the Arizona Coyotes. While the Capitals still feature two stars in Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, they are a team on the decline and do not have the same depth as previous seasons with the offseason departures of Marcus Johansson and Justin Williams.

Look, there is nothing pretty about Buffalo, as their 2.50 goals scored per game is tied for third-worst, and their 3.71 goals allowed per game ranks third-worst in the National Hockey League. Yet this is a team with talent up front, and they could not ask for a better spot than against Philipp Grubauer (0-3-1, 4.08 GAA, .876 SV%) who has not been the same reliable backup he was a season ago (13-6-2 2.04 GAA, .926 SV%).

With any bad team like the Buffalo Sabres, there are a handful of negatives, but there are also some positives. Throughout the years, Washington's strength has been their scoring on the power play, but their opportunities on the tail-end of a back-to-back could be few and far between against a Buffalo team that has taken the second-fewest minor penalties this season. Buffalo is hurting on the blue line, but the Capitals' situation is not much better as Matt Niskanen is still out, while wingers Brett Connolly and Andre Burakovsky have been out for sometime, further depleting Washington's depth.

It is not often the Buffalo Sabres will warrant a wager, but tonight looks like a good night for a young, fresh team to feed off the crowd and punish a Washington team which is winless in four attempts when playing on consecutive nights.

Fair Odds: Sabres -120
