Only one match graces Friday’s Major League Soccer card, but it might be the most intriguing game on the weekend slate.
Reigning MLS Cup champion Seattle hosts Los Angeles Football Club in a showdown of Western Conference powerhouses. This will be their third meeting of the season, with each team picking up a prior win.
Most recently, the Sounders earned a 3-1 victory against LAFC on Aug. 30 at CenturyLink Field. Jordan Morris scored twice, leading the home side to all three points.
Seattle enters the match off its stunning 7-1 rout of San Jose. It marked the ninth time in league history a franchise scored at least seven goals in a game. Joevin Jones and Raúl Ruidíaz showed off, each finishing with two goals and an assist.
On the other side, LAFC got out of its recent funk with a 4-2 triumph over Portland at Banc of California Stadium. Manager Bob Bradley and his team, which had lost three of its previous four matches before the win, have to feel a sense of optimism heading into this important contest.
Looking at the data and numbers, Seattle is one of the best in all statistical categories. The Sounders boast an impressive 16.7 expected goals, which leads the entire league. Seattle sits at 7.5 expected goals against for a +9.2 xGDiff number, along with a +1.31 xGDiff/90 minutes.
Expected goals (also known as xG) is an advanced statistic that gives an indication of whether results are based on sustainable factors like a steady creation of scoring chances, or whether it is down to aspects such as luck or outstanding goalkeeping.
On the other side, LAFC has decent numbers in similar categories (14.2 xGF/10.3 xGA for +3.9 xGDiff and +0.49 xGDiff/90), but it’s really nothing in comparison to what its counterpart has on its résumé of crooked numbers.
With that, I’m backing the total to go over the number. The line is currently at 3.5 goals, but I’m going to buy it down to three goals and play it with confidence.
There have been at least four goals scored in four of the last five matches between these sides, and I see that trend continuing in this spot.
I’m also going to sprinkle a little on Seattle as well. The Sounders are in better form, and frankly, they’re the more polished side. Expect a big effort from one of the league’s most dominant clubs.
The Bets: Seattle — Draw No Bet (-107); Total Over 3 Goals (-157)
