Clubs really struggling at the start of the Premier League campaign go at it Sunday when Wolverhampton Wanderers hosts Fulham at the Molineux Stadium.
Both sides find themselves in the bottom five of the 20-team table, so getting a positive result is the lone goal for each side in this showdown.
Wolves has owned the series as of late, going unbeaten in its last 12 matches against Fulham across all competitions. That statistic just adds to the problems for the Cottagers, losers of nine of their last 10 Premier League contests.
Despite this game featuring teams trying to find their respective way, this could make for an intriguing matchup. Let’s take a deeper look at these sides:
Questions galore had to be floating around the Wolverhampton locker room following its shocking 4-0 loss against West Ham United in last week’s fixtures. Wolves was dealt a thorough drubbing, which had to have raised eyebrows across the league.
The result was a sharp contrast to the way Wolves opened its season when it cruised to a 2-0 win against Sheffield United. The club followed that up with a 3-1 loss to title contender Manchester City, but the setback against West Ham was devastating and means it really must get a result before the international break.
That sluggish start has also had a direct impact on Wolverhampton’s statistical data as well. Wolves is currently sitting on just 2.8 expected goals and a lackluster 4.6 expected goals against, resulting in a -1.8 xGDiff and a disappointing -0.52 xGDiff/90 minutes.
Expected goals (also known as xG) is an advanced statistic that gives an indication of whether results are based on sustainable factors like a steady creation of scoring chances, or whether it is down to aspects such as luck or outstanding goalkeeping.
The Cottagers’ return to England’s top flight could not have gotten off to a worse start. They’ve lost all three of their matches by wide margins, giving up 10 goals along the way. Fulham’s attack has been no better, recording just three goals that came in a 4-3 defeat against Leeds United.
Fulham must take advantage of a Wolves side that’s been anything but great in its own start, so expect the newly promoted side to come out firing like it did in that Leeds setback.
The Cottagers are going to struggle the entire season, and we’ll likely find them near or at the bottom of the table when it comes to team data. Fulham is actually not too bad when it comes to its offense, boasting 2.7 expected goals.
However, it’s the brutal 5.1 expected goals against resulting in a -2.4 xGDiff and -0.81 xGDiff/90 minutes that’s the biggest problem for the visitors.
This has the makings of being a ridiculously ugly match. Are we going to get the Wolverhampton side that opened its season with shutout win or the one that’s given up seven goals in its last two matches?
I lean toward that victory against Sheffield United, simply due to the fact Wolves knows it simply cannot afford to drop points at home in this league if it doesn’t want to flirt with the relegation party this early in the season.
That said, I am backing Wolves to get things going against a Fulham side simply is not good enough to stay with the majority of its opponents in this league. I think Wolves will find the back of the next a few times, which has me backing it to score at least twice in this game.
I will sprinkle a little on the total going over the number as well. Fulham has given up at least three goals in its three league games, so I will take a swing on this play at a ripe number.
Picks: Wolves Total Over 1.5 Goals (-134); Total Over 2.5 Goals (+114)
