Only one match is on Thursday’s Major League Soccer schedule, with Seattle hosting San Jose in a Western Conference showdown.
The Sounders enter the match fresh off a disappointing 2-1 loss to Portland during Sunday’s fixtures. It was quite a different scoreline from the last time the sides met, which resulted in Seattle rolling to a 3-0 win at Providence Park.
On the other side, San Jose had to be somewhat pleased with its latest effort. The Earthquakes, who had been in a bit of a funk, scratched out a 1-1 draw against Colorado at Avaya Stadium.
The last time these clubs met resulted in a scoreless draw at the MLS is Back tournament in Orlando. That scoreline extended Seattle’s recent dominance over San Jose, with the defending MLS Cup champion extending its unbeaten run to five games.
Looking at the data and statistics, Seattle continues to be one of the best in the league overall, highlighted by 11.8 expected goals and 6.3 expected goals against numbers for a solid +5.5 xGDiff number, along with a +0.93 xGDiff/90 minutes.
Expected goals (also known as xG) is an advanced statistic that gives an indication of whether results are based on sustainable factors like a steady creation of scoring chances, or whether it is down to aspects such as luck or outstanding goalkeeping.
On the other side, San Jose finds itself well behind Seattle in all of the similar categories (5.3 xGF/10.8 xGA for -5.5 xGDiff and -1.10 xGDiff/90) with its back against the wall.
With all of that in mind, I’m backing Seattle to get back to its winning ways and pick up all three points. Top to bottom, the Sounders are the better club and should cruise to the victory. Add in the fact that Seattle is 3-0-2 against San Jose in their last six meetings, and I like the home side to roll.
I am also going to play Seattle to score at least two goals and sprinkle a little on captain Nicolas Lodeiro to find the back of the net.
The Bets: Seattle -137, Seattle Total Over 1.5 Goals -180, Nicolas Lodeiro (Seattle) To Score Any Time +175
