DFS is online in LouisianaDespite being available in most U.S. states, Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) has been illegal in Louisiana. This changed earlier this year — DFS is now allowed. Major DFS forces like DraftKings or FanDuel, which also have sportsbooks, are only gaining access to the market now. Often, they hold an "early movers" advantage in markets as sports betting goes live because of their DFS foothold. The competition will escalate as the market is flooded with options at once. We expect this to translate to strong offers to the sports bettor's benefit. |
Louisiana Sports Betting Regulations
Louisiana has laid the groundwork to be major, bettor-friendly sports betting state. Fortunately, wagering on college sports is allowed. There are still some "can do" and "can't do" betting actions, however.
What can I bet on in LA?
Legal Bet Types in Louisiana — Sports fans can bet a full range of bet types, including:
- Point Spreads. Spread betting is a bet on the margin of victory in a game, or the point "differential." (See: Our Guide to Point Spread Betting)
- Moneylines. Moneyline betting is when you pick the winner of the game or event, either one team or another. (More detail here: Moneylines)
- First Half & Second Half. Halves let a bettor treat the first half and the second half as separate matches. (Additional insights: Half Bets)
- Totals. A total, also known as an over/under, is a bet on the number of points both teams will combine to score in a game. (See: Understanding Totals in Sports Betting)
- Futures. Future bets are a bet on an event that will be decided in the future (e.g., end-of-season results). (More: Longer-term Betting: Futures)
- Player Props. A "prop" bet, short for a proposition, is a wager that is not directly tied to the final score or outcome. College player props will be banned starting on August 1, 2024. (See: Everything to Know About Prop Bets)

Sports Betting Glossary
Sports betting comes with its own language and terminology — spreads and money lines, over/unders and props, juice and vig, and so much more. It can be intimidating for newer betting sports fans, so be sure to consult our sports betting glossary for detailed definitions of all the main terms.
We recommend each of the online sportsbooks to help define these terms within their product to make everything easier for you to understand, too.
Sports Betting Mistakes to Avoid
Betting on your favorite teams like the New Orleans Saints might seem like a no-brainer, but you need to be careful if you’re going to stay healthy all around in the sports betting world.
Here are some mistakes to avoid.
How Louisiana Sports Betting Compares: The Sports Betting Report Card
Mobile Apps
Louisiana is the only state that allows betting at the county (or, in Louisiana’s case, parish), but sports betting will be legal in the vast majority of the state including Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport and all major population centers.
Deposit Options
There are no statutory restrictions, and customers can deposit from anywhere in the country. It's important to keep in mind wagering will not be allowed in blocked parishes.
Competitive Prices
Caesars has already invested hundreds of millions of dollars in its New Orleans casino upgrades and a new stadium sponsorship deal and should be joined by DraftKings, FanDuel, and many other top brands. This means bettors should expect solid prices.
Market Coverage
Expect all major sports to be available, including plenty of bets around the states most popular teams: the New Orleans Saints and LSU Tigers. Though in-state college betting is permitted, there are bans on individual player props for NCAA athletes that's starting on Aug. 1, 2024.
Impact of Sports Gambling Profits on Louisiana
As consumers, we don’t often think about the tax benefits of legal sports betting. However, the state of Louisiana will greatly benefit from the extra tax revenue that will be received once this rollout is complete.
House Bill 697 set the tax rates for both retail and mobile sports books. Mobile sports books will be taxed at 18%, while retail sports books will be taxed on their profit at 10%. This is a fairly small rate compared to states like New York, who just finalized a tax rate of 51% on sports book operators. This tax revenue will benefit various state causes. Here is a breakdown of where the tax revenue will go:
- 60% to the general fund
- 25% to early education
- 12% to the parishes
- 2% to programs for gambling addiction
- 1% to a sports wagering purse fund for horse racing
Louisiana Sports Betting Background and Legalization Timeline
Gov. John Bel Edwards signed Louisiana’s sports betting regulation bill was signed into law in June 2021, allowing as many as 41 mobile operators to enter the state. The bill allows each of the state’s 20 combined casinos and pari-mutuel horse tracks to partner with two online operators apiece.
The two bills came after Louisiana voters in 55-of-64 parishes approved legal wagering in their respective jurisdictions on a 2020 ballot measure. Eligible bettors age 21 and up physically within these parishes can place a mobile bet with a licensed operator from their phone or mobile device without having to complete registration in person.
Louisiana is the first state to approve mobile sports betting on a county-by-county (or parish-by-parish) basis. Voters in every parish with a casino or horse track approved the 2020 referendum, allowing all these facilities to open retail sportsbooks on their properties. Bettors can wager from any approved parish, which includes those around Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport and most other population centers.
The following nine parishes did NOT approve sports betting:
- Caldwell
- Catahoula
- Franklin
- Jackson
- LaSalle
- Sabine
- Union
- West Carroll
- Winn
Most major U.S. operators are expected to apply for one of the 41 total online licenses. Those licenses will include major sportsbooks such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, among others. Caesars, which is rebranding its Harrah’s New Orleans casino under its parent company name, will open its eponymous online sportsbook and retail companion at the land-based casino. The parent companies behind Golden Nugget, TwinSpires and B Connected each operate Louisiana gaming facilities and are also expected to launch their respective sportsbooks.
Louisiana’s sports betting regulatory bill will permit betting on college sports, including the LSU Tigers football team. Industry analysts estimate that college sports betting may make up 15% of total handle, a percentage that could be even higher in college football-crazy Louisiana.
Louisiana will be just the third mobile wagering market in the South, after Tennessee and Virginia.
It's been a process getting sports betting to the goal line. Here are some of the important events along the way to legalization:
