Pennsylvania Reports Record-Breaking $463 Million Handle in September

Days after New Jersey reported an eye-popping $748 million in sports bets for September, Pennsylvania blew by its own record.

On Friday, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported that $463 million in sports bets were placed in September within the state, a 27% bump from August and a 137% increase from September 2019 ($195 million).

FanDuel led the state with a 37% market share, followed by DraftKings at 25%. Penn National, through its new Barstool SportsBook, had about seven percent of the market share, but it didn't start operating until midway through the month. Roundhill Investments, which runs a sports betting ETF, estimated that Barstool's real stake of the market is likely now in the 11-12 percent range in the Keystone State.

Nevada's record for the largest sports gambling handle in a month — $614 million in November 2019 — lasted eight months when New Jersey obliterated it in August with $688 million reported.

New Jersey, which did $4.5 billion in handle in 2019, is on pace to near $5 billion in 2020. Nevada, which has yet to report its September handle, holds the yearly record of $5.3 billion, which was set last year.
