With U.S. sports betting almost six years old, you may have already signed up for DraftKings or FanDuel while traveling, even if you don't live in a state where these operators have been legal. Like North Carolina.

And you may try to sign up again this week after North Carolina's online sports betting launch, especially with all the promos being handed out.

Unfortunately, you won't be eligible for the standard welcome offer at FanDuel, DraftKings and other sportsbooks if you already have an account there. You may get another bonus to get you back on the platform, but it will likely be smaller. You will still be eligible for all the promos and boosts for existing users on these platforms.

Here's what you need to know about your sportsbook accounts if you've already signed up in other states.

Can't I just create a new account with a different email to get the promo?

Unfortunately, you can't. Sportsbooks all use verification technology providers who tie your account to your identity. That's why you have to enter the last four digits of your SSN, and your birthday. They do this for several reasons, including the prevention of underage gambling, but a nice benefit is that you can't abuse the promos or try to create another account if you get limited.

There are also restrictions in some sportsbook terms and conditions about "one offer per household" — i.e. you can't make a new account in your spouse's name. The level at which sportsbooks can and do enforce something like this isn't really known, and probably varies by sportsbook.

But if you're using two accounts on the same device and IP address, it will be pretty easy for them to catch and you may forfeit your bonuses. If you're not logging in from the same device as your spouse or sibling you share a house/IP address with, you should be fine.

Will I get any offer if I'm already signed up?

Yes, DraftKings and FanDuel in particular may send you a smaller offer to re-engage you and get you back on the platform. That's what they did for Massachusetts bettors who had likely signed up in New Hampshire or New York already.

And while you may already be signed up at FanDuel and DraftKings, you can still get plenty of other offers — including Underdog Sports, which you could not have signed up for because North Carolina is its debut state for its sports betting product.

BetMGM, bet365, Caesars Sportsbooks, ESPN BET and Fanatics Sportsbook are all likely operators you haven't tried if you live in North Carolina and used only DraftKings or FanDuel while traveling.

Do all books work like this?

Almost – most of the sportsbooks launching in North Carolina use what we call a "single wallet." That means no matter which state you login from, you'll use your same account, and your balance will be the same state to state.

Up until last year, BetMGM had multiple wallets for every state but has unified them since. Caesars does not share accounts by state, but if you create a new one, they'll remove the new-user promo.
