What is it not legal to bet on in NJ? 

Betting on college teams from New Jersey is not legal. Even if it’s being played elsewhere. While Rutgers is the only FBS football team in New Jersey, there is a host of Division I basketball programs with lines on their games, including Fairleigh Dickinson, Monmouth, NJIT, Princeton, Rider, Saint Peter’s and Seton Hall.

There is no betting on college events taking place in New Jersey. Any neutral-site games, NCAA Tournament, bowl games, etc., happening in New Jersey cannot be wagered on. New Jersey does not frequently host NCAA Tournament regionals, and there are no active college bowl games there as of 2026.

How Do I Know If an NJ Sportsbook Is Legit?

Every sportsbook in this article holds a license from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. All on this list have been extensively tested testing by our team for their reliability.

What Does Sports Betting Look Like in NJ?

American odds are the default across every New Jersey sportsbook, and they use a plus or minus sign to tell you two things at once: who's the favorite or the underdog, and what the bet pays.

A minus number is a favorite and tells you how much you must stake to win $100. 

• A team at -150 requires a $150 stake to return $100 in profit. 

A plus number is an underdog and tells you what a $100 stake returns in profit. 

• A team at +180 returns $180 profit on $100 staked. 

Your stake (original wager) comes back on top of any winning return.

House rules vary between New Jersey books and matter more than most people check. What happens to a bet if a game is postponed, how a starting-pitcher condition works in baseball, whether overtime counts toward a player prop, when a market is voided rather than settled all of it sits in the operator's terms, all of it differs, and all of it decides real money. Sports Betting Example for NJ - NJ Devils to win the Stanley Cup

Say the New Jersey Devils are priced at +3500 to win the Stanley Cup, and you place $2.

That plus figure tells you a $100 stake would return $3,500 in profit, so your $2 returns $72, ($70 profit + $2 stake).

For the bet to land, the Devils must win the Stanley Cup outright. 

Not reach the Final. Not win the Metropolitan Division. Not go deep and lose in seven. 

The bet pays if and only if the Devils lift the Cup. Your $2 is committed from the moment you place it until the Cup is decided, potentially eight or nine months later.

That's the trade in a futures bet: a small stake, a large multiple, a long lock-up, and a single narrow path to a return.

Common Sports Betting Markets in NJ

• Moneyline - a straight bet on who wins. The simplest market on the board and where most bettors start.
• Point spread - the favorite gives up a set margin and the underdog receives it, leveling the market to roughly even odds. A -6.5 favorite must win by seven or more.
• Totals (over/under) - a bet on the combined score of both teams finishing above or below the line (number of points), regardless of who wins.
• Player props - wagers on an individual's performance, such as passing yards, TDs scored or three-pointers made.
• Team props - the same idea applied to a team, such as first team to score, total team rebounds, or whether a side scores a TD in both halves.
• Futures - long-term bets on outcomes decided later in the season, like a Stanley Cup or Super Bowl winner. 
• Multi-Game-Parlays - multiple selections from different games combined into one bet where every leg must win. The payout multiplies, but every leg must land.
• Same-Game-Parlays - parlays built from legs within a single game, Again the potential winnings grow, but every selection must win
• Live / in-play - markets that update continuously during a game, letting you bet on a shifting price after the event has started.

New Jersey Midterm Elections 2026: Key Races, Ratings and Odds

There is no governor's race in New Jersey this year. Mikie Sherrill won that office in November 2025, so at the top of the 2026 ballot is Cory Booker's U.S. Senate seat.

The race most likely to change hands, though, is further down with the 7th Congressional District, where Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. is in one of the most closely watched House contests in the country.

Who's running for U.S. Senate in New Jersey in 2026?

Democratic Sen. Cory Booker faces Republican Justin Murphy in the New Jersey Senate race, and all three major nonpartisan forecasters rate New Jersey's Senate race solidly Democratic. 

Booker, the former mayor of Newark, first won the seat in a 2013 special election and is seeking a third full term. He ran unopposed in the June 2 Democratic primary. Murphy, an attorney and former Tabernacle Township committeeman, won a four-way Republican primary with about a third of the vote after finishing third in the 2024 Senate primary.

The two debated on Oct. 8 at Rider University, where they split sharply on the Iran war, tariffs and the state's immigration policy. With that debate behind them, the remaining milestones in New Jersey's Senate race are the third-quarter fundraising reports and early-voting turnout. Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate race in New Jersey since 1972.

U.S. House: New Jersey's Key Races to Watch

Democrats hold nine of New Jersey's 12 House seats and Republicans hold three, and control of the chamber is up for grabs nationally (see more election coverage on Action Network's Politics hub). Only one New Jersey district is rated a battleground by forecasters, but two others are drawing attention from the national parties.

New Jersey's 7th District: Tom Kean Jr. vs. Rebecca Bennett

Democrat Rebecca Bennett is favored to unseat Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. in New Jersey's 7th District. Two of the three major forecasters rate the race Lean Democratic, and the third has rated it Tilt Democratic since June. 

The district stretches from Union County's suburbs west through Hunterdon and Warren counties and is one of the wealthiest in the country. Trump narrowly carried it in 2024, the same year Kean won a second term by about five points. Bennett, a retired Navy helicopter pilot making her first run for office, won the June Democratic primary with 45% of the vote in a four-way field.

The race changed earlier this year when Kean was absent from Congress for about four months without explanation; he later disclosed that he had been treated for depression. In moving the race toward Democrats in September, one forecaster pointed to that absence. The latest polling shows Bennett narrowly ahead, within the margin of error, with Kean's favorability underwater and many voters still forming an opinion of Bennett.

Kean has President Trump's endorsement; Bennett has been endorsed by Gov. Sherrill and the AFL-CIO, and local reporting says a statewide firefighters union switched its endorsement to her in September.

The candidates' only debate, back on Sept. 27 in Rahway, centered on tariffs, gas prices and the Iran war.

New Jersey's 9th District: Nellie Pou vs. Rosie Pino

Democratic Rep. Nellie Pou is favored to win a second term in New Jersey's 9th District, which all three major forecasters rate Likely Democratic. Republicans targeted the Passaic County-based seat after Trump narrowly carried it in 2024, when Pou won her first term by about five points.

In the 2025 governor's race, however, Sherrill won the district by nearly 20 points. Pou's Republican opponent, Rosie Pino, won her party's June primary by fewer than 400 votes, and campaign finance filings show Pou with a large cash advantage.

New Jersey's 2nd District: Jeff Van Drew vs. Zack Mullock

Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew is the clear favorite in South Jersey's 2nd District, which forecasters rate solidly Republican. Van Drew, who switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in 2019, won re-election in 2024 with 58% of the vote in a district Trump carried by about 13 points. His opponent is Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock, who won a four-way Democratic primary in June.

The race picked up attention recently when the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added the seat to its target list. The candidates are scheduled to debate later this month at Stockton University.

Other New Jersey House races in 2026

The remaining nine New Jersey House seats are rated safe for the incumbent party. Two have new faces. In the 11th District, Democrat Analilia Mejia, who won an April special election to replace Sherrill, faces Republican Joe Hathaway in a rematch. In the open 12th District, surgeon and Army veteran Adam Hamawy won a 12-candidate Democratic primary to succeed retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman and faces Republican Gregg Mele.

Key dates for New Jersey voters in 2026

The deadline to register to vote in New Jersey's general election was Oct. 13. In-person early voting runs Oct. 24 through Nov. 1 at designated sites in each county. Mail-in ballot applications must be received by Oct. 27 by mail, or made in person at the county clerk's office by 3 p.m. on Nov. 2.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3. Mail ballots returned in person or in a drop box are due by 8 p.m. that night; ballots sent by mail must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by county election boards by Nov. 9.
