After last weekend’s postponed match, San Jose returns to Major League Soccer action Sunday when it hosts Chicago in an intriguing nightcap.

The home side has struggled this season, sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference and winless in its last four league games.

Meanwhile, Chicago’s campaign has not gone to plan either, with the club finding itself in 13th place in the East coming into this contest.

With the bad defenses paired with solid offensive talent, this could end up being one of the more entertaining fixtures of the holiday weekend.

San Jose Earthquakes

While this has been another disappointing season, striker Jeremy Ebobisse has been the one positive for the Earthquakes.

The United States international is one of just three players in MLS that has at least nine goals in the season, joining Jesús Ferreira (FC Dallas) and Sebastián Driussi (Austin FC) on the list.

Unfortunately, his goals haven't been good enough to overcome a defense that has allowed the most goals (34) in the league this season.

By The Numbers

  • 29.9 — To add to the poor defensive metrics, San Jose is last in the West in expected goals allowed, according to fbref.com.
  • 0 — Ebobisse has failed to score in the last four home games, with his last goal at PayPal Park coming April 16 against Nashville SC.

Chicago Fire

After a summer of exciting signings, there was a lot of anticipation for this campaign, but Chicago has failed to meet those expectations so far.

However, the Fire has picked up two wins out of the last three games, with victories over D.C. United and the midweek upset over Philadelphia.

Bottom line, this is another game where Chicago needs to get points if there is any hope to qualify for postseason play.

By The Numbers

  • 1.8 — Away from home this season, the Fire have allowed this average of expected goals per match.
  • 2 — Chicago has allowed multiple goals in five of its last six road games.

Betting Analysis & Pick

When you look at the odds for this fixture, the lines are telling you the oddsmakers are expecting goals, which means one of the top goalscorers in the league has a great chance of finding the back of the net.

That said, I'm backing Ebobisse as an Anytime Goalscorer at +185 odds at FanDuel as my top betting selection.

Neither team has had consistent success defensively, which means both will be looking to attack in a very winnable game. This should lead to an open match that which Ebobisse can really thrive in.

You can also bet the game to fly over the total of 2.5 goals, but I think this is a great price for one of the best MLS strikers to end his home-scoring drought.

The Pick: Anytime Goalscorer — Jeremy Ebobisse (+185)
