2020 BMW Championship Early Betting Preview: Don’t Wait on Finau, Morikawa at Olympia Fields

Dustin Johnson put on a clinic in Boston shooting 30-under par and usurping Justin Thomas at the top in the FedEx Cup (FEC) standings. The PGA TOUR now heads to Olympia Fields CC (North) for the BMW Championship.

The top 30 at the end of the week will make their way to Atlanta for the TOUR Championship.

Olympia Fields CC has most recently played host to the 2003 U.S. Open and the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship. Robby Shelton, Jon Rahm and Bryson Dechambeau are a few golfers who played in the Amateur Championship, and Bryson ended up winning that year.

The course will play as a par 70, measuring 7,366 yards and putt on bluegrass greens, which is in between poa and bentgrass. Similar to TPC Harding Park a few weeks ago, both off-the-tee and approach, with an emphasis on proximity from 175 to 200 yards, will be a few key stats to focus on when building your betting card this week.

DJ's performance at TPC Boston was tremendous, but don't let it overshadow some other guys who played remarkably. Let's take a look at a few golfers who should be on our radar before the odds start to settle.

Collin Morikawa

The last time Morikawa lost over three strokes with his irons was the Travelers Championship back in June. A couple of weeks later, at his next tournament, Morikawa beat Justin Thomas in a playoff to win the Workday Charity Open. Morikawa ending up gaining 9.2 strokes in approach at Muirfield Village, which ranked third in the field.

Even though the course setup will be different (like TPC Harding Park), Morikawa should feel comfortable at Olympia Fields CC since he played in the Illini Invitational during his college career.

Morikawa finished T13 in the 2017-18 season and runner up, to Matthew Wolff, the following year. Other players in the field who've competed in the Illini Invitational over the last five years are Scottie Scheffler, Matthew Wolff, Viktor Hovland and Cameron Champ.

Daniel Berger

Only a couple of players have been better than Berger tee-to-green since the restart, and with a third-place finish at TPC Boston, Berger looks just as good as he did when he won at Colonial CC a couple of months ago.

Par 4 efficiency is crucial on a par 70 and Berger ranks first in the field over the last three months. He also rates out well on the longer par 4s measuring 450 to 500 yards ranking 13th over the same timeframe.

DB has been playing elite golf dating back to the Waste Management Open. Other than the missed cut at Memorial, Berger hasn't finished worst than 13th and already has two top 5s, two top 3s, a runner up and a win.

Tony Finau

Finau disappointed last week missing the cut at a course he should've played well, but if his number inflates as a result of this, he's worth a look at a no-cut event. Current form is essential in the playoffs, and Finau is coming off a bad week when we saw a ton of scoring.

Still, over his last 12 rounds on courses of similar length, Finau ranks ninth in par 4 efficiency, first in Strokes Gained: approach-the-green and third in Strokes Gained: tee-to-green.
