  • Wind speeds and temperatures have had an effect on NFL games historically.
  • Below you'll learn how, and see the current forecasts for each Divisional Round playoff game.

Ah, January football. Big-thermometer season. Camera-shots-of-flags-blowing-in-the-wind season. Fans-growing-a-layer-of-frost-on-their-beards season.

Whatever it takes to get excited about the football weather this time of year, it's not just a way to add another layer of television drama to an already exciting weekend. It matters for the actual gameplay on the field, and bettors should know how.

Each of the Divisional Round weekend's four matchups has potential to feature at least one of the following weather conditions:

  • Wind speeds of 10+ mph
  • Temperatures below 30 degrees

And each of those conditions have led to profitable betting strategies.

Since 2003, NFL games (regular and postseason) played in double-digit winds have finished under the closing total 56% of the time on a sample of almost 900 games (492-387-10). That makes sense, seeing as how windy conditions will limit big plays through the air and increase the difficulty of kicking field goals.

The cold, however, has not been as effective in limiting offense.

It certainly seems like cold weather should create a harder scoring environment, and perhaps it does, but not to the extent that the betting market has given it credit for. Over that same span, games played in temperatures below 30 degrees have hit the over at a 59% rate, though on a smaller sample (115-79-2).

Here are the current projected conditions for the weekend's matchups.
