MLB Wednesday Weather: April Showers Bring … May Showers

They say "April showers bring May flowers." What they don't tell you is that, despite some promising results from the zucchini plants you put by your window last week, the weather outside still sucks and there's still plenty of rain!

A couple of Tuesday postponements have led to a couple of Wednesday double-headers. As Ernie Banks always said, "The weather outside sucks, let's play two!"

Highest Weather Rating

• Pirates at Rangers: 73

Weather Ratings are a proprietary number created by FantasyLabs, which are on a 0-100 scale, with 100 being the best hitting atmosphere and 0 being the best pitching atmosphere. Weather Rating takes into account temperature, wind speed, wind direction, stadium elevation, humidity and atmospheric pressure. 

We have ourselves an Arlington matinee, but it's not quite a Texas scorcher. Temperatures will be in the low- to mid-80s with the standard wind blowing in from right field, in addition to a chance of storms. The total of 10.5 is also the highest of the day.

Though there would theoretically be two other Weather Ratings above 50, the roof is scheduled to be closed in Arizona, while rain in the Miami area should have that roof closed, too.

Lowest Weather Ratings

• Athletics at Red Sox: 8
• Reds at Mets: 10
• Astros at Twins: 12

While there's just one game with a lofty Weather Rating, there's plenty of garbage towards the bottom of the list. Leading the way is Boston, where the Weather Rating of 8 is actually an improvement over yesterday. The rating, which had been 0 at the time I wrote the weather forecast, ended up closing at a 5. Though they're playing in the afternoon today, it's not going to be warm or anything — overcast, low-50s and raw.

They're playing at night in New York, but the conditions look nearly identical to Boston's. Even the slight right-to-left breeze is the same. With Jacob deGrom taking on Anthony DeSclafani, the over/under has dropped from 7 to 6.5.

It will be even chillier in Minnesota, with temperatures dropping into the upper 40s. There will also be a slight breeze blowing in from left, but surprisingly, the over/under has risen from 8.5 to 9 since opening behind lopsided bets and dollars on the over.

Inclement Weather

• Rays at Royals: Game 1 — A chance for a little pop up, especially towards the end of the game. Game 2 — A higher chance of storms throughout the game, though the two large systems of rain should stay mostly north and south of KC.
• Pirates at Rangers: Scattered thunderstorms in the area throughout the day.
• Orioles at White Sox: Slight chance of showers for both games.
• Tigers at Phillies: Slight chance of showers, more so towards the end of the game.
• Cardinals at Nats: Same deal as Tigers-Phillies.
• Reds at Mets: Slight chance of showers throughout the game.
• Padres at Braves: Slight chance of showers, likely earlier than later if anything.
• Astros at Twins: Slight chance of showers throughout the game.
