Methodology: How We Ranked the Best Cities for a Post-Work Game Night
To find the best cities in the U.S. for professionals to enjoy a live sports game after work, we analyzed 50 major cities across five core experience pillars. Each metric was scored on a scale of 1 to 10, then combined into a final Overall Score using a weighted average that reflects its relative importance.
1. Game Availability Score (30% Weight)
To estimate the number of sports teams in major US cities — including professional franchises, college programs, minor league clubs, and women’s teams — we used a mix of structured data sources and custom search APIs.
Data was gathered from:
- Google Custom Search API, querying official sports sites, college athletics pages, and minor league directories.
- Wikidata and DBpedia, which provide structured lists of teams by location.
- ESPN and NCAA portals for Division I college teams.
- Wikipedia category pages (e.g., “Sports in [City]”) to supplement gaps.
Figures are rounded (e.g., “20+”) to account for yearly changes, new teams, and overlaps across leagues.
2. Post-Work Commute Score (25% Weight)
Using Google Places API, OpenStreetMap API, and Distance Matrix API, we calculated how long it typically takes to get from each city’s downtown or business hub to major sports venues.
We combined the median and trimmed average commute times to avoid outliers (like traffic spikes) and better reflect the typical fan experience. These were then scaled from 1 to 10, with shorter commutes scoring higher.
3. Stadium Experience Score (15% Weight)
We identified top-rated sports venues in each city using data from OpenStreetMap and the Google Places API. Each stadium was scored based on:
- Bayesian-adjusted ratings, which correct for sample size bias and prevent a few perfect scores from overly influencing results.
- Log-based review weighting, which rewards venues with more reviews while avoiding overreliance on popularity alone.
These two methods were combined to produce fair, balanced quality scores. We then averaged all stadium scores within a city to produce its final Stadium Experience Score.
4. Pub Experience Score (15% Weight)
To assess the social and post-game experience, we evaluated the quality and affordability of sports bars in each city’s downtown area using OpenStreetMap & Google Places API
- Bar quality was calculated using the same Bayesian and log-adjusted review techniques.
- Affordability was based on Numbeo’s average cost for a pint of beer and a meal per person.
Bar quality was given 60% weight, and affordability 40%, to prioritize atmosphere and fan sentiment over cost alone.
5. City Safety Score (10% Weight)
We used Numbeo’s Safety Index, which reflects how safe locals and visitors feel in each city, especially at night. We scaled these scores from 1 to 10, with safer cities receiving higher marks — an important factor for post-game or post-pub plans.
6. Weather Comfort Score (5% Weight)
We used Open-Meteo to gather average temperatures from May to October — the most popular months for business travel, after-work outings, and sports events. Cities were scored based on the median temperature during that period, normalized on a 1–10 scale, with more comfortable weather rated higher.
