Moose Club Week 13 football bad beats: NFL dogs and goal line stands

There was a moose on the loose in Canada yesterday, which should sound familiar to those who bet football this past weekend in the United States.

For those of you not familiar with the term "Moose," it has been used for years within the sports betting world to reference a bad beat. It originated within the old school gambling forums over 15 years ago and has stuck ever since.

Each Tuesday, I will highlight the 10 biggest "mooses" from the football weekend from my perspective (I can't see everything). Let's get into the top 10 bad beats of Week 13…

10. Browns +7.5

The Browns make their weekly appearance on the list. However, you can’t really blame this one on Cleveland, as the refs really blew a late call that ultimately led to the Bengals' cover-clinching touchdown. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Cleveland turned it over on downs inside Cincinnati territory on their final possession.

9. Syracuse/BC Over 56.5

Boston College took a 42-14 lead early in the fourth quarter, which meant over backers simply needed one more score over the final 13 minutes to get to the window.

After a Syracuse punt, Boston College ate up over seven minutes of game clock on a long drive that didn’t result in points, as the Eagles turned it over on downs inside Syracuse territory. On the next possession, the Orange turned it over on downs inside Boston College territory before the Eagles ran the clock out on a 42-14 victory.

Over backers are still probably thinking about a drive late in the third quarter that ended with Syracuse turning it over on downs inside the BC 5-yard line.

8. Giants +7.5

Janoris Jenkins picked off Kirk Cousins and returned it for a touchdown in the third quarter to tie the game at 10-10. That score held until the Redskins took a 17-10 lead with a little over three minutes left in the fourth quarter. On the following possession, the Giants turned it over on downs inside their own territory after failing to secure a first down. The Redskins couldn’t secure a first down on their next drive, which meant they had to send the field goal team out with under two minutes left in regulation.

Nick Rose made the field goal, which put Washington outside of the number for the first time all game. Giants backers then had to watch the inevitable Eli interception in Redskins’ territory that ended any hope of a backdoor, as New York fell 20-10 to their NFC East rival. Happy Thanksgiving!

7. Purdue/Indiana Under 51

Indiana took over possession at their own 13-yard line with a little over three minutes left in the fourth quarter, trailing by a score of 31-17.

On the first play of the drive, Richard Lagow was sacked at his own 2-yard line. The Hoosiers would eventually move the chains on a long third-down conversion and drive the entire 98 yards for an over-clinching touchdown that cut the Purdue lead to 31-24 with one minute left.

6. New Mexico +20

Underdog backers had to feel confident early in the fourth quarter when the Lobos had first and 10 inside the San Diego State 20-yard line, trailing only by a score of 21-10.

However, New Mexico would not score on the drive, as they missed a chip shot field goal. The two teams would trade punts before the Aztecs extended their lead to 28-10 on a long touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter.

On the ensuing possession, New Mexico would throw an interception in San Diego State territory. The Aztecs then broke a 60-yard touchdown run with just a few minutes left to extend their lead to 35-10. You probably could have guessed that New Mexico would throw another interception in SDSU territory to seal the 25-point loss.

5. Cincinnati -5.5

All Cincy -5.5 backers needed was to keep UConn out of the endzone on their final drive, which started at their own 7-yard line with less than 90 seconds remaining.

The Huskies managed to keep the drive alive on two separate fourth down attempts, the last of which came on a penalty after time had expired. As a result, UConn scored on the untimed down. Coach Randy Edsall then signaled for his team to go for two and the win, which crushed any last hopes of those who bet the favorite.

Hold on! A taunting penalty was called on UConn after the play, which meant the Huskies would not go for two. They sent their field goal unit on the field for the game-tying extra point, which would give -5.5 backers hope in overtime.

But, he missed it. Game over.

4. Akron -14

It’s not a real list until we have MACtion.

Akron scored two touchdowns in the final 20 seconds of the first half to take a 24-7 halftime lead, but they would never score again in a 24-14 victory.

The Zips ended a scoreless second half by running the clock out inside the Kent State 10-yard line to add insult to injury for those who backed the MAC favorite.

3. Florida Atlantic -21.5

Favorite bettors had to feel confident a few minutes into the second half when the Owls took a 31-6 lead over a lifeless Rice team. Here is how each possession played out from that point forward:

• Charlotte punt
• FAU lost fumble in Charlotte territory
• Charlotte punt
• FAU lost fumble at their own 22-yard line
• Charlotte 22-yard TD drive (31-12)
• FAU turnover on downs inside red zone
• Charlotte turnover on downs
• FAU turnover on downs following three unsuccessful runs from the 1-yard line
• Charlotte punt
• FAU runs clock out for the 31-12 victory

2. SMU/Tulane 2H Over 31.5

With 31 points already in the bank, Tulane simply had to score on their final possession to get 2H over backers to the window.

Trailing 41-38, the Green Wave had the ball at the SMU 2-yard line on first and goal with just under a minute left. They not only didn’t punch it in the endzone against a horrific SMU defense, but they didn’t even kick the game-tying field goal in a brutal 41-38 loss.

1. Jets +6

The Jets took a 20-18 home lead into the fourth quarter against the Panthers. However, that lead quickly turned into a 12 point deficit after Carolina scored on a fumble recovery and punt return. New York did answer with a touchdown to get back inside the number with a little over five minutes left, but they would go on to lose by a final score of 35-28 thanks to a Graham Gano 45-yard field goal with 21 seconds left.
