Arguably the most fun division in all of Major League Baseball, the AL East seems to be a dogfight almost every season. The rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox is one of the best in sports and both have been in World Series contention over the past two decades.

The Tampa Bay Rays have risen to the top of the ranks of late and the Toronto Blue Jays have a talented young core that will keep them in contention for a long time. The Baltimore Orioles have been an afterthought in recent years, but after a red-hot stretch to finish the first half, the O's are proving to be much more competitive in 2022.

AL East History

Orioles logoBaltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are coming off of a lackluster 2021 campaign. Their 52-110 record tied them with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the worst in MLB. The highlight of their season consisted of a no-hitter from John Means when they faced the Mariners on May 5th, 2021. Their stadium, Camden Yards, is often revered as a top-5 stadium in MLB. A breakthrough in 2022 was not expected, but the team exceeded expectations in the first half and the debut of Adley Rutschman gives Orioles fans something to be excited for as they look to the future.

Red Sox logoBoston Red Sox

After securing a Wild Card spot in 2021, the Red Sox are poised to make another run for the postseason in 2022. Their star-studded lineup puts them in a great position to win the AL East and their ability to score runs at a large clip makes them a force to be reckoned with.

    • Division Titles: 10
    • League Pennants: 14
    • World Series Titles: 9

Yankees logoNew York Yankees

After an early postseason exit in 2021, the Yankees have the star power to be a contender late into the season. With plenty of big-swinging sluggers like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, the offense is hard to stop. They also have a top-tier rotation and a bullpen that could serve as a driving force in a division chock-full of power-hitters. The Yankees were the best team in baseball over the first half of the season and entered the All-Star break as the World Series favorites.

    • Division Titles: 19
    • League Pennants: 40
    • World Series Titles: 27

Rays logo Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays make the most with what they have. Just like a scene out of Moneyball, the Rays had the fifth lowest payroll in Major League Baseball, but still managed to win the AL East in 2021. This year, they have the sixth lowest payroll in baseball, but have continued to compete and are battling for a Wild Card spot.

    • Division Titles: 4
    • League Pennants: 2
    • World Series Titles: 0

Blue Jays logoToronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have a roster that relies on young stars. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette have been looking to follow in the footsteps of their fathers and their early success provides a hopeful future for Toronto. This is another team that has the potential to explode on offense on any given night. Toronto missed the playoffs by one game in 2021 and is looking to earn a Wild Card spot and return to the postseason in 2022.

AL East Updates

May 28: At 33-13 the Yankees have the best record in baseball and are 6.5 games up on the Rays. The Blue Jays are 7.5 games back and the Red Sox, who struggled in April, are 11 back, but have won eight of their past 10 games. Things seem to be clicking for Boston and if history has taught us anything it's that this division will come down to the wire. New York has certainly done all it can in the early going, but Tampa Bay, Toronto and Boston will all likely be in the race until the end.

April 28:
The AL East has played out as we expected (or the betting market expected) through the first few weeks. The Blue Jays and Yankees are out in front, the Rays are lurking and the Orioles are a disaster. The only surprise is the Red Sox, who have struggled a bit but have played a series each against the Blue Jays, Yankees and Rays.

Preseason: Despite not making the playoffs in 2021, there are reasons to be optimistic about the Blue Jays this season. They have an excellent young core of bats, led by Bo Bichette, Vlad Guerrero Jr. and George Springer. They added starters Jose Berrios and Kevin Gausman in the offseason to bolster their rotation.

The Rays are the defending champs but opened as the third or fourth favorite to win the division, depending on the sportsbook.
