Cam Newton has yet to find a new squad over a week after he was released from the New England Patriots.
On Tuesday, DraftKings updated odds on where he’ll land next.
The Dallas Cowboys are +500 favorites to land the former MVP, with the Washington Football Team and the Houston Texans in close second at +600.
The Cowboys will see Dak Prescott return after he missed the latter half of last season with a serious ankle fracture.
Their backup is currently slated to be Cooper Rush, a 27-year-old out of Central Michigan who was re-signed to the practice squad last season after Prescott’s injury.
Newton would assuredly be a step up at the backup position.
But there have been concerns over Newton’s unvaccinated status, something that may dissuade Dallas from gambling on the 32-year-old quarterback from Auburn. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has strongly emphasized the team’s vaccination rates — and the need to get vaccinated — in recent interviews.
Regardless, the Cowboys are currently the odds-on favorite to nab Newton from free agency.
Cam Newton Next Team Odds
Lines are according to DraftKings as of Tuesday.
Next Team | Odds |
---|---|
Cowboys | +500 |
Texans | +600 |
Washington Football Team | +600 |
Steelers | +800 |
Colts | +800 |
Panthers | +800 |
Lions | +800 |
Dolphins | +1000 |
Cardinals | +1200 |
Vikings | +1200 |
Ravens | +1200 |
Bengals | +1400 |
Jets | +1600 |
Titans | +2000 |
The Texans recently named Tyrod Taylor as their starter, but unlike in Dallas, Newton would compete for the starting role almost immediately after signing with Houston.
The Washington Football Team have Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinecke to choose from, which makes the signing unlikely. That — along with coach Ron Rivera’s emphasis on vaccinations — makes this signing a longshot in my eyes. The value on +600 is just not there.
Another notable team on the list are the Arizona Cardinals, whose backup is Colt McCoy.
