Everything is on the line Tuesday at the MLS is Back tournament when New England and Toronto FC battle for Group C supremacy in Orlando.
The showdown between these Eastern Conference franchises will decide who wins their group, making this an extremely important match for seeding in the knockout stage of the competition.
Toronto enters the game fresh off a 4-3 victory against Canadian rival Montreal. Striker Ayo Akinola continued his torrid scoring tear, recording a hat trick in the latest edition of the 401 Derby. Prior to that, the Reds settled for a 2-2 draw against D.C. United in their opening match of the group stage.
On the other side, New England has been just as consistent and impressive against the same foes. The Revolution mustered a 1-1 tie against D.C. United in its most recent fixture and earned a 1-0 win against Montreal to open the competition.
That said, I am backing the total to go over the number. These clubs are not known for sitting back and letting the match come to them, especially when they square off against each other.
The total has surpassed 2.5 goals in five of the last six meetings between the combatants and I expect the trend to continue in the latest tilt. Add in the fact Toronto’s defense has conceded five goals in its first two matches and you have to like the chances of hitting this play.
New England and Toronto have each scored at least one goal in their last six matches, so I am also playing both teams to score in this game. I firmly expect both teams to get after it from the opening whistle and chase all three points, which is going to lead to another wide-open affair.
If you’re looking for a side, I would give a slight lean to Toronto on the spread. The Reds are extremely deep and get striker Jozy Altidore back in the mix up top, which is going to cause a ton of issues for the Revolution defense.
Altidore and Akinola could wreak havoc against New England if they see time on the field together, giving Toronto a distinct edge in this showdown.
The Bets: Over 2.5 Goals (-154); Both Teams To Score (-188)
