Champions League action continues Wednesday, with the global soccer world focusing on two marquee showdowns.

Like Tuesday’s matches, both contests will take place behind closed doors due to the spread of the coronavirus across Europe. That should make for a somewhat bizarre and eerie atmosphere inside the empty stadiums, both of which would normally feature raucous supporters for these all-important games.

Atletico at Liverpool

  • Atletico odds: +575
  • Liverpool odds: -182
  • Draw: +295
  • Over/Under: 2.5 (-106/-118)
  • Time: Wednesday, 4 p.m. ET

The highlighted showdown of the day takes place in Merseyside, when defending champion Liverpool hosts La Liga side Atletico Madrid. The Reds come into this match looking to avenge a 1-0 setback in the first leg of the Round of 16 matchup.

Liverpool, which is second in the Premier League with 60.96 expected goals this season, has a whole lot of history working in its favor entering this match. The Red have not lost a home Champions League match since 2014. That spells trouble for Atletico Madrid, which has struggled mightily away from Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Los Colchoneros is winless (0-4-2) in its last six road contests and has been even worse over even a longer stretch, picking up just two wins in its last 15 matches away from home across all competitions.

Add in the fact Liverpool has not been shut out once this season at Anfield across all competitions and the distinct edge sits with the hosts.

Liverpool vs. Atletico Madrid Tale of the Tape

  • The total has stayed under 2.5 goals in five of Atletico Madrid’s last six Champions League matches
  • Liverpool has recorded five shutouts in its last six home Champions League matches in the knockout round
  • Atletico Madrid is unbeaten in its last four matches in England, recording 1-1 draws in its last three matches on British soil
  • The total has stayed under 2.5 goals in Liverpool’s last three Champions League contests

Expect Liverpool to be relentless on the attack and keep defensive-minded Atletico Madrid, which is fourth in La Liga with 41.91 expected goals, on its heels all night. The Reds have not lost a match at Anfield all season and I don’t see that first blemish happening here. Back the hosts to win the match and the total to stay under the number.

The Bets: Liverpool -175 | Liverpool Team Total Under 2.5 Goals (-125)

Borussia Dortmund at Paris Saint-Germain

  • Borussia Dortmund odds: +275
  • Paris Saint-Germain odds: -125
  • Draw: +325
  • Over/Under: 3.5 (-115/-108)
  • Time: Wednesday, 4 p.m. ET

The French giants return home to take on the upstart Bundesliga side in what should be a thrilling affair.

Dortmund, behind two goals from sensation Erling Braut Haaland, snared a 2-1 victory at home in the first leg of the series. Neymar scored the all-important road goal in the match, which could be the difference for PSG in that tie breaking category.

Dortmund has won five consecutive matches across all competitions, including three consecutive victories since that win against PSG at Signal Iduna Park. Les Parisiens has been in fine form as well since that defeat, winning three straight games in the process of getting ready for this contest.

Offense hasn’t been any sort of concern for these sides this season. PSG is ranked first in expected goals (74.98) in Ligue 1, putting it almost 27 points ahead of Monaco in that category. On the other side, Dortmund is ranked fourth in the Bundesliga with 49.32 expected goals.

PSG vs. Borussia Dortmund Tale of the Tape

  • PSG has scored a goal in 31 consecutive Champions League matches
  • The total has gone over 2.5 goals in Dortmund’s last four Champions League contests
  • PSG is unbeaten in its last 13 home games (12-0-1) across all competitions
  • Dortmund has just five wins in its last 13 road matches across all competitions

That said, oddsmakers have established a relatively high number on the total for goals scored in the match. However, I have a lot of concerns when it comes to atmosphere inside the stadium. There will be none whatsoever, which could make this somewhat of a mental drag — especially in the opening half — for both clubs.

For me, the sharp play is on the total staying under the number at Le Parc des Princes.

If you’re looking for side, I would take a shot with PSG avoiding being eliminated at this exact stage of the tournament like it has the last three seasons.

The Bets: Total Under 3.5 Goals (-110) | PSG (-143)
