Polymarket Bitcoin Up or Down: How the New 15-Minute Market Works
Polymarket US is launching a new way to trade Bitcoin's price action, and it doesn't require any long-term predictions. The new market, Bitcoin Up or Down, will resolve every 15 minutes, all day, every day.
I've been digging into how the Bitcoin Up/Down 15-Minute Market will work ahead of its Tuesday, September 22 at 12:00 PM ET launch. I'll be among the first to trade at this market, so stay tuned for a full review.

🕯️ What Is Bitcoin Up or Down?
Bitcoin Up or Down is a live, continuously running market inside the Polymarket US app built around a single question repeated every 15 minutes: will Bitcoin's price be higher or lower than the "price to beat" when the current candle closes?
The candle is the live visual showing how Bitcoin's price is moving during the current 15-minute round. Users watch this graph to see if price ends up above or below the price to beat when the market closes.
Instead of picking a side once and waiting weeks for an outcome, you're reacting to price movement in real time.
The interface centers on a live candle chart, the price to beat, a countdown timer, and two buttons: Up and Down. Each Up/Down button shows live odds that shift as the market moves, so the price you see reflects what the crowd currently thinks will happen before the candle closes.
⏱️ How the 15-Minute Cycle Works
Every 15 minutes, a new market opens with a fresh price to beat to start the cycle over. Since Bitcoin trades 24/7, so does this market, which means there's always a live round running.
- New market every 15 minutes: According to our Polymarket review, as soon as one candle closes, the next one opens with an updated price to beat.
- No downtime: Because Bitcoin never stops trading, neither does this market. You can find a live round at 3 a.m. just as easily as at noon.
- Cash out early: Even though these markets are short, you don't have to ride them to the close. If your position looks good at the 7-minute mark, you can lock it in instead of waiting to see how the full 15 plays out.
I expect many people to cash out early as soon as their positions are correct as a way to guarantee a payout. But you can also sell early to cut your losses if the market rapidly starts moving against you.
Note that this product might be new to Polymarket US, but it's not new in the industry. The best prediction market apps such as Kalshi and Robinhood already have similar markets for various cryptocurrencies and other commodities, and Polymarket US is catching up.
🎯 How to Place a Trade
I'll verify these steps myself once Bitcoin Up or Down is live, but Polymarket is seemingly make it very simple to trade on these 15-minute markets:
- Check the price to beat. This is the number Bitcoin needs to close above or below when the candle ends.
- Pick Up or Down. Each button displays live odds based on where the crowd currently stands.
- Choose your amount and confirm. Once you swipe to confirm, your position is live until the candle closes or you cash out early.
Initially, users will only be able to trade 15-minute markets on Bitcoin. However, Polymarket US may roll out other cryptocurrencies and commodities for up/down markets, including Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and Dogecoin.
💬 Bitcoin Up/Down Goes Social
Every 15-minute market at Polymarket has its own live chat, and I expect it to get busy fast.
Users are likely to react to price swings in real time, and every trade will post as a card that others can see.
The chat itself will likely affect Bitcoin market prices, although the extent of its influence remains to be seen.
📊 Bitcoin Up/Down vs. Standard Markets
Most CFTC-regulated prediction markets ask you to have a view on something weeks or months out, like an election or a season-long outcome.
Bitcoin Up or Down at Polymarket flips the script. You don't need an opinion on where Bitcoin is headed by December — you just need a read on the next 15 minutes.
| What you don't need | What you actually need |
|---|---|
| 📅 A long-term Bitcoin thesis | ⏱️ A short-term read on the next 15 minutes |
| 📈 Deep technical analysis | 👀 A quick glance at the current candle |
| 🕰️ Patience for a slow resolution | 🔄 Comfort with fast, repeated rounds |
But like with standard prediction markets, you should prioritize responsible trading when trading on Bitcoin 15-minute markets at Polymarket. Stay in control in the face of the fast-paced nature of this market, as losses can quickly add up.
