Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Betting Analysis
Premier League defending champions Liverpool are looking to start this season on the right foot after running away with the title last season, tying Manchester United's record for most league titles with 20. After a solid first season — one where Liverpool looked set for more but had to "settle" for the league title — head coach Arne Slot will be looking to add another trophy, one that the Reds haven't won since 2006.
Liverpool had a solid transfer window, adding Bayer Leverkusen duo Jeremie Frimpong at right back and Florian Wirtz at midfield, alongside left back Milos Kerkez and forward Hugo Ekitiké. However, the Reds arguably missed out on their biggest target of the off-season, with Swedish striker Alexander Isak still very much a Newcastle United player.
Moreover, they've lost a key cog in Trent Alexander-Arnold, and also parted ways with South American duo Darwin Nuñez and Luis Diaz. Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are also expected to be absent, still recovering from injury.
Slot's team will look to keep Liverpool's run of never losing back-to-back games at Wembley, having disappointed in the EFL Cup final in March against Newcastle United — to an Isak goal, of all people. They've looked solid in pre-season, beating Preston North End 3-1, Yokohama Marinos 3-1 and winning a double-header against Athletic Bilbao with 4-1 and 3-2 wins. Their only defeat came at the end of July, a 4-2 goal-fest against AC Milan.
Wembley Stadium has become a bit of a stronghold for Crystal Palace, breaking its 120-year wait for a top trophy when it shocked Manchester City in May. It's now four wins in six for the Eagles at the home of the national team.
Oliver Glasner’s team is expected to be in the fight for European spots this season. It has done well in the market, adding left-back Borna Sosa from Ajax and former PSV goalkeeper Walter Benítez. It has also kept star winger Eberechi Eze, although he has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.
It showed in the pre-season, with wins against Millwall and Crawley and a tie to Cray Wanderers, before splitting a double header with German outfit Augsburg. The Eagles will be without striker Eddie Nketiah, Matheus França and youngster Caleb Kporha.
The Community Shield has been kind to FA Cup winners in recent years, with seven of the last nine winners arriving at the final via the cup. Still, it'd be near tragic for a club that has spent close to 300 million euros to start its season on a loss. It's rare for debutants to win the Community Shield at the first time of asking, with four of the last seven debutants losing out — Leicester City the last one to do it, in 2021.
Liverpool also takes the head-to-head, winning 12 of the last 16 matchups, so I'm backing them to win and do it comfortably.
