The 2025 NBA Finals were already generating lots of excitement among basketball fans and celebrities alike, even before the thrilling end to Game 1.
In a bold move, global rap icon Jay-Z placed a $1 million wager through his friend Michael Rubin's Fanatics Sportsbook, betting that the Oklahoma City Thunder would take out the Indiana Pacers in exactly five games.
Fanatics shared the news on its X account.
However, after Indiana's jaw-dropping come-from-behind victory in Game 1, the Thunder now face the challenge of winning four consecutive games for Jay-Z to secure his payday.
Should his prediction come true, he stands to walk away with a hefty profit of $2.3 million, bringing his total winnings to $3.3 million.
The Odds Are Now Stacked Against Jay-Z
The bad news for Jay-Z is that the probability of a team down 0-1 in the NBA Finals winning four straight games to come back and win in five games is very low. If each game had a 50% chance of either team winning, then the probability of a team winning four consecutive games is (0.5)^4 = 0.0625 or 6.25%.
According to The Land of Basketball, the last team to win the NBA Finals after losing Game 1 was the 2022 Golden State Warriors, who came from behind to beat the Boston Celtics, but it took them six games to do it.

NBA Reddit also shared this stat: the 2025 Pacers are only the 5th team since 1996 to win game 1 of the NBA Finals on the road.
The other 4 teams to do so were:
- 2022 Celtics @ Warriors
- 2013 Spurs @ Heat
- 2004 Pistons @ Lakers
- 2001 76ers @ Lakers
Data shows that only around 71% of Game 1 winners go on to win the series.
This means that out of the 78 NBA Finals played, 54 winners of Game 1 went on to win the championship. Specifically, home teams winning Game 1 have an even higher success rate, with a 83% chance of winning the series.

Famous Bets in NBA Finals History
Jay-Z's gamble is one of many high-profile bets in NBA Finals history. Over the years, the NBA's biggest stage has seen its share of daring wagers:
- Charles Barkley's Big Gamble: The outspoken NBA analyst and former player Charles Barkley is renowned for his affinity for betting. Famously, he once put $500,000 on the Portland Trail Blazers to win the 1992 finals against the Chicago Bulls. Unfortunately for Barkley, Michael Jordan and the Bulls had other plans.
- Drake's Fanatic Fandom: Global rapper and Toronto Raptors ambassador Drake has been spotted siding with his hometown team with both passion and wagers. In 2019, during the Raptors' road to their first NBA title, rumors swirled about Drake making significant bets to celebrate and support his team’s historic run.
The Billionaire's Risk: Business magnate Tilman Fertitta, owner of the Houston Rockets, once caught attention for making a substantial bet on his team back in 1995. Fertitta reportedly bet seven figures on the Rockets to win the championship, a risk that paid off when they defeated the Orlando Magic.
