Los Angeles Kings Preview
The Kings are set to drop the puck on a new era. Not only has Anze Kopitar retired, but they have a new head coach in Peter Laviolette. The former Stanley Cup champion was brought in to improve the Kings' offense, specifically on special teams.
Los Angeles will need Quinton Byfield to have a breakout season, as he's stepping into the first-line role in between Artemi Panarin and Adrian Kempe. That has the chance to be a dynamic line for the Kings.
Last season, the Avalanche swept the season series and the playoff series vs. the Kings, so LA is out for revenge this time around.
Colorado Avalanche Preview
The Avalanche are one of the Stanley Cup favorites once again, fresh off a dominant regular season that ended in disappointment when they got shockingly swept by the Golden Knights in the Western Conference Finals.
We saw the Avs allow only 197 goals last season, which ranked 1st in the NHL. It will be interesting if they can maintain that coming into the 2026-27 season.
Rather than choosing a side, I'm locking in on the total.

I'm wondering if the move to a shorter preseason is affecting scoring, at least in the early part of the year. On opening night, we saw the following scorelines at the time of this article: Panthers 1-0 Hurricanes, Bruins 3-0 Rangers, Canadiens 3-2 Maple Leafs. Perhaps teams are a bit more rusty, making it easier to keep the puck out of the net.
On top of that, the Kings are adjusting to a new system under Peter Laviolette, while the Avalanche led the league in goals against last season. That makes me like the Under in this spot.
