Tottenham vs. Leeds United
Tottenham looked defensively sound in the early weeks of Thomas Frank’s tenure, but defensive frailties have come to the fore of late. Spurs allowed Bodø/Glimt to get 18 shots away and amass a total xG of 2.52 in their 2-2 midweek tie. That means both teams have now scored in three of Tottenham’s last four competitive matches.
Meanwhile, Daniel Farke has seemingly found the fix for Leeds' attack. Having started the season by scoring one in four league games, it netted five goals in its last two matches. In their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last weekend, Leeds had a total of 19 attempts and were credited with creating three big chances.
This meeting with Tottenham looks set to be another goal-friendly affair, as clashes between Leeds and Tottenham have often been. Both teams have scored in four of the last six meetings, with those matches averaging 4.33 goals.
Pick: Both Teams To Score – Yes (-143)
West Ham United vs. Arsenal
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has earned praise for the way he has set this team up defensively. Over the past three seasons, Arsenal has been the only team to have conceded fewer than a goal per game in the Premier League.
Having needed two late goals to beat Newcastle last week, Arsenal conceded very few opportunities. The Magpies had just eight shots and finished the game with an xG of just 0.61. The Gunners face weaker opponents here, so they will fancy their chances of keeping a clean sheet.
Despite West Ham's spirited display against Everton in Nuno Espirito Santo’s first game in charge, Arsenal represents a step up in class, so they shouldn’t have as many chances here.
Pick: Arsenal Win and Both Teams to Score – No (-125)
Sunderland vs. Manchester United
Ruben Amorim is fighting for his job at United. His system has many detractors, but the underlying data suggests that chance creation isn’t one of their problems. The Red Devils have the highest xG in the Premier League with 12.21.
However, the club's big investment in a new front three in the summer has been unable to mask the manager’s tactical shortcomings. United has had more than its fair share of defensive woes, with both teams having scored in four of their last five league outings. Amorim’s team has the second-worst xGA (expected goals against) in the league, with 9.35. Their opponents have overperformed that metric by scoring 11 goals.
Sunderland is enjoying a magnificent start to the campaign. 11 points from their opening six games means they come into this game above United, and they have looked reasonably strong going forward. The Black Cats have scored seven goals in the league thus far, and face a team that is short on confidence.
Pick: Both Teams To Score – Yes (-125)
Liverpool vs. Chelsea
Liverpool’s issues continued midweek as they were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the Champions League. The club spent lavishly in the summer transfer window, but the new signings have seemingly upset the balance of the squad. The Reds' embarrassment of riches at the front has led to a league-leading 2.33 goals per game average, but it also leaves gaps at the back. Liverpool are without a clean sheet in their last five competitive matches.
Chelsea also has a star-studded attack. Cole Palmer may be out, but Joao Pedro, Estevao, and Pedro Neto all have match-winning capabilities so that the home side can get on the scoresheet. Yet much like Liverpool, there are defensive issues, and the clash with Arne Slot’s team should also see plenty of chances at both ends.
The most recent encounter resulted in a 3-1 win for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. That game saw 28 attempts with an overall expected goals of 4.18. At Anfield, Liverpool ran out 2-1 victors, but both teams were credited with creating three big chances.
