USA vs Turkiye Betting Preview, World Cup Analysis
Through two games, the USMNT has looked very impressive. There is one caveat to that: the opposition hasn’t been great, but you can only beat what is in front of you, and the Americans have not only done that, they’ve done so in style.
There were concerns that without Christian Pulisic, the team might lack creativity against Australia, but it didn’t look like that, and it’ll give the team enormous confidence that even without one of their best stars, they can get the job done.
As it stands, the potential route later in the tournament is lacking any truly tough teams, for at least the next few rounds, so things are aligning for a deep run.
The USMNT has utilized a 4-2-3-1 through both games, with speed and creativity in wide positions, all looking to feed Folarin Balogun, who has done a good job leading the attack.
USA's Projected Starting Lineup
- Goalkeeper: Matt Freese
- Defenders: Tim Ream, Miles Robinson, Alex Freeman
- Wingbacks: Sergino Dest, Antonee Robinson
- Midfielders: Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman
- Forwards: Folarin Balogun, Christian Pulisic
USMNT Pick: USA Moneyline Prediction
The big talking point heading into this game is what lineup Mauricio Pochettino will go with. There’s a tough balancing act between resting players and the benefits of that, with the potential to lose momentum with a loss.
What makes things tougher is that four players have yellow cards, meaning an additional one against Turkiye would see them suspended for the next knockout game.
I imagine Pochettino would bench those four: Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun, Chris Richards, and Antonee Robinson. You also have the Pulisic question. You don’t really want to risk him, but getting him some minutes would be useful, so starting from the bench might be sensible.
What that means for the game itself is a far weaker defense. For my money, Robinson is the USMNT’s most important player, a truly exceptional left back who adds to the side both offensively and defensively. His pace is crucial for Tim Ream, who, in his older years, isn’t overly quick.
On the other side of Ream is Richards, who might also miss this. I’m concerned about the back line if Ream isn’t sufficiently covered, and Turkiye can take advantage of that.
Turkey hasn’t scored in either game, but they’ve taken 51 shots across those games, and at the time of writing, have the highest xG (expected goals) in the tournament. They’re due for positive regression, especially with the USMNT resting players. Combine that with a hungry team that’ll be desperate to head home with the scalp of the hosts, and to ensure this campaign hasn’t been a total disgrace.
That said, the US would still have a great chance of winning, even with the Turks scoring. The crowd at SoFi will be bouncing, and we’ve seen that it has really helped the players through the opening two games.
When it comes to goals, it’s Haji Wright who we’re backing to score. I suspect he starts in place of Balogun, who sits on a yellow card. He was great for Coventry in the Championship this season, bagging 17 goals.
He’s only had one minute at the World Cup so far, but as Balogun’s deputy, given Turkiye’s defensive woes, he has a great chance of scoring. That said, it's perhaps best to wait until lineups are confirmed pre-match to ensure he starts.
