After the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, The Action Network collected a list of records that were broken at the tournament.
To highlight a few of the records that were broken:
- Kylian Mbappé (France) broke the record for the most overall goals scored at the World Cup after scoring 10 goals at the 2026 tournament, bringing his total to 22 goals scored. Prior to the 2026 tournament, the record holder was Miroslav Klose (Germany), who scored 16 goals throughout his career. Klose’s record was briefly broken by Lionel Messi (Argentina), who scored 8 goals at the 2026 World Cup (Messi’s new total: 21), but in the game for the third place, it was equaled and subsequently broken again by Mbappé.
- Lionel Messi (Argentina) broke the all-time assist record (now 12 assists, +4 in 2026) and he extended his own records for the most overall World Cup matches played (now 34) and won (now 23).
- Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) became the first player ever to score in six different World Cup editions, and later set the record for the oldest outfield player to feature in a knockout match (41 years old).
- Unai Simón (Spain) set the new record for the longest run without conceding by a goalkeeper.
- Argentina broke Uruguay's record for the longest streak scoring 2+ goals in every match – they scored at least twice in 13 consecutive World Cup matches (2022-2026), beating Uruguay's 72-year-old record of 11 straight matches (1930-1954) – the streak was finally broken after they failed to score in the final against Spain.
- The Netherlands broke Brazil's record for the longest unbeaten run in World Cup history, extending it to 16 matches in a row – past Brazil's old mark of 13, which had stood since 1966.
- Brazil themselves extended their own all-time records for the most World Cup appearances, matches played, wins, and goals scored.
- Spain set new records for the longest run without conceding a goal, in both clean sheets and minutes, a streak that stood until Belgium finally ended it in the quarterfinal.
- Additionally, on the touchline, Dick Advocaat (Curaçao) became the oldest coach in World Cup history at 78 years old.
