Fire vs. Storm Preview

Neither the Storm or Fire are on track to make this year's WNBA playoffs, but the two teams are set to face off for the second time this season on Saturday. Seattle is expected to take home a win as the host, even though it's won three fewer games than the visitors. There's a good reason for that.

The Phoenix Mercury recently snapped the Storm's two-game winning streak, but Flau'jae Johnson has been exceptional lately. The rookie guard has averaged 21.0 points and 7.7 rebounds while shooting 51.1% from the field over her previous three outings. She's also knocked down 44.4% of her triples during that stretch. Her performances have provided a major offensive boost to the league's second-lowest scoring team. Seattle also just got an upgrade in the frontcourt.

Defensive specialist Ezi Magbegor made her 2026 debut against the Mercury on Thursday and can bolster Seattle's extremely capable defense. The four-time WNBA All-Defensive Team member will likely continue to come off the bench for now, but was effective on both sides of the ball with eight points, three rebounds, and a steal on 3-of-4 shooting in her first game back after suffering a foot injury during FIBA World Cup qualifiers.

Will Magbegor be enough to help Seattle avoid dropping to 0-2 against Portland this year?

Fire vs. Storm Prediction

The Storm fell short in a five-point loss to the Fire earlier this season despite getting above-average offensive showings from Dominique Malonga, Natisha Hiedeman, and Awa Fam.

Johnson's offensive productivity has a strong impact on the Storm's team success. All five of Seattle's wins have come in games where the LSU product has scored at least 16 points. The hosts in this matchup are 0-15 straight up when Johnson falls short of that mark.

Portland doesn't have as much star power, but it is more efficient on offense with a host of consistently effective long-range shooters. The Fire might not win, but Carla Leite, Bridget Carleton, and others can keep them close enough to cover.

Best Bet: Portland +4.5
