Sun vs. Aces

Friday, June 21
10 p.m. ET

Sun +5.5

By Stephen Nover

I have no doubt that come the playoffs, the two-time defending champion Aces will be right back as a formidable force and will probably be the team to beat again.

But the Aces aren't at that stage yet.

Connecticut and New York are the two best teams in the WNBA right now, and Connecticut has the best record at 13-1. The Sun are 5-0 on the road.

Las Vegas shouldn't be this big of a favorite against the Sun; the Aces will be fortunate to win the game straight-up. The Aces are 7-6, including 4-4 at home with losses to the Mercury, Storm, Lynx and Liberty.

The Aces will get rolling when star point guard Chelsea Gray returns to top form. Gray made her season debut this past Wednesday, helping spark the Aces to a 94-83 home win against the Storm.

That was a revenge spot for the Aces, and the team was pumped to finally get Gray back from her foot injury.

Gray played 15:30. She scored only one point while attempting only two shots. Gray averaged 15.2 points last year. Her minutes likely will go up in this game, but there's plenty of rust, so the timing isn't that good for the Aces to draw this elite of an opponent right now.

Connecticut is the top defensive team in the league, holding opponents to 70.7 points per game. The Aces have yet to get their defense straightened out, allowing 83 or more points during their last five games.

Pick: Sun +5.5

Sun Team Total Under 79.5 (+106)

While the Aces have given up at least 80 to six of their seven opponents in June, I feel like the Sun don’t have the same weapons that other teams have exploited the Aces with.

The Sun have scored 80 points in regulation in only six of their 14 games this season. They rank 11th out of 12 teams in percentage of points scored from 3, which is where the Aces have been extremely vulnerable this season.

The Sun have had a rather easy schedule, and against the other top-five teams in the league, they only went over this number once, against Minnesota in overtime.

With Connecticut’s slow pace and a Vegas team that’s getting healthy, I like the Aces to put the clamps on in this game and come away with a gritty victory, holding the Sun under 80.

Play this down to 78.5.

Pick: Sun Team Total Under 79.5 (+106)
